West Coast Hip Hop refers to any type of hip-hop from the west coast. The west coast is usually considered the birthplace of boogaloo and popping, dancing that was associated with early electro-hop. The west also had old school hip-hop rappers like Disco Daddy & Captain Rapp. The west coast would later ignite gangsta rap in 1986 with artists like Ice T and N.W.A. After the Golden Age of Rap ended in 1990, the west coast continued to contribute with artists like Pharcyde, and any artist from 1990-present. In short, anything released by a west coast artist is considered west coast hip-hop, regardless of the time period or genre it comes from.
