I'm no Coil connoisseur (such a vast catalogue, it's hard to know where to begin), but I do really enjoy their 'Musick to Play in the Dark' album. In fact, that's this evening's listening sorted!

HI MATT. It's been ages! I ran into you in the shoutbox for Wire - A Mutual Friend. I love that song. Hope you've been well and safe? The whole world's gone to shit haha

Hi! Yes, what an amazing song. I'm well and safe, thanks...for now! It's grim and scary here though. Those in charge here don't care if we live or die, so there's that to contend with. I know things look a lot better in NZ. Other than the recent cases, are things more or less 'normal' there now?

Yeah we've been very lucky to avoid getting into a really serious COVID situation. With the current community outbreak, somehow, miraculously, there hasn't been a single case in the South Island, where I've been living for a couple years now. It's hit up north, mostly in Auckland, where I used to live. And yeah, other than a couple of brief lapses, again up north, things were more or less normal up until this outbreak. People would wear masks on public transport and that was about it really. It has also meant that vaccination roll-out wasn't a priority, but we're catching up on that now as well.

I usually follow events in the UK pretty closely and it's breaking my heart man. Life has been getting more and more stressful and that's before we had a pandemic to deal with too. I feel like our two countries have quite a lot in common, good and bad, but have diverged radically in terms of COVID response, which I guess comes down to the sheer dumb luck of who happens to be in government at the time. It's been hard to watch things unfold from afar, helplessly. Please just know there's at least one guy over here sending aroha and best wishes to the UK, and who is concerned for your wellbeing (I suspect there's a lot of us actually). Is there any particular music you've found to be comforting when things have been feeling really grim?

Honestly, NZ is the envy of a lot of people right now. The UK isn't a good place to live at the moment anyway, prior to Covid, but at this point, people are dreaming of moving to NZ. It's very hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel here...with the pandemic and also politically. I'd certsinly like to visit NZ sometime, but obviously, not right now. Anyway, I appreciate your concern, and thank you. As for music, yes, it's always a comfort, and I couldn't be without it. It's definitely helping to keep me a bit sane. Sometimes, you put a great album on, and all the shit goes away, temporarily. I tend to find comfort in the familiar, so I've been listening to a lot of my favourites, but I've also been listening to a lot more darkwave and electronic stuff lately. I can't get enough of it at the moment. Something about it just seems to resonate, in the way that post-punk was for me a few years ago. My most recent discovery is Trance To The Moon, who I can wholeheartedly recommend!

Hello mate, what impressions about last solo stuff by James Dean Bradfield? I haven't listened his last record yet, except a few songs. Still hope it's far better than last Manics album

Hi! Yeah, I'm not too keen on newer Manics stuff, but after one listen, I was quite impressed with JDB's new album. Pretty powerful stuff, especially if you know the story of Victor Jara. Lots of great guitar bits on there as you would expect, and his singing is great too, of course. I probably didn't give the last Manics album a fair chance, so maybe I shouldn't compare, but I'd say this is probably the best thing James has been involved with for quite a while. Definitely give it a listen!

Acrobat1234
I guess I need some time to be convinced of his new stuff, I find some pretty good songs but I prefer pissed off JDB like during THB, KYE or JFTPL times, or on the other hand experimental sound from Futurology. I expected them to go this way. The new solo album is like something between Postcards and Resistance, not bad but somewhat predictable, I miss a risk and some kind of tension in his latest compositions. Still one of my fave rock composers and guitarist, and he's good songwriter too.

Oh, in general I would agree, I prefer James when he's pissed off, and few singers can convey anger like him, but we're not getting much of that these days. He's also got a great ear for a tune, and for melodic guitar playing, he's unmatched. Luckily, there's lots of that on his new one! I do need to give the newer Manics album more of a chance, including Futurology, but they didn't really grab me when they were released, which is why I'm so pleased that Even In Exile has impressed me so immediately.

"Three Imaginary Lemurs - the best Cure album that never was." This really tickled me, haha, smiling away to myself on the train like a lunatic. I think I've followed you for a while, probably from Cocteau Twins pages but I don't think I've said hello before or properly explored your library which is insanely awesome. Inspired to have a big Dead Can Dance spree later.

I've followed you back. DCD are awesome. You're welcome to explore my library. I noticed some unfamiliar names in your charts too, so I'll have to add them to the very long list of artists to check out...

I'm surprised there's much that's unfamiliar, I won't recommend anything specifically since I know we all have a "to listen list" that expands quicker than we can keep up, but if there's anything in particular you have a question or comment about feel free to ask. I'll also be having a look through the unfamiliar names here as well. And I just noticed you're going to one of the upcoming Massive Attack shows! I am completely happy for you and not going to go and sob in a corner or anything. (And DCD... TWICE?!). I'd be very interested in hearing how any of those are!

Thanks, I may be asking for advice...I DO have a long list, as it's just impossible to keep up with all the bands out there across various genres! Ha, well the Massive Attack show was a couple of weeks ago now...I don't want to make you jealous but I can't lie, it was every bit as amazing as you'd expect...I'm assuming you know they had a certain Liz Fraser singing with them! It was such an honour to see her singing in 2019 and she still sounds great. As for DCD...yeah, they're doing two consecutive nights in London and my friend and I couldn't which one to go to, so we just went for both! It will be a weekend to remember, that's for sure. I see you went to see John Grant! How was it? I'm familiar with some of his work and particularly enjoyed Pale Green Ghosts.

I was on the DICE waiting list for the Bristol Massive Attack shows and out of nowhere one freed up, hooray!!! Liz Fraser indeed! Now I don't have to suffer slow death by jealousy. Actually I did go to an event where she was speaking in 2017, but she didn't sing (!?). With John Grant, funnily enough, he interviewed her. It's all very interconnected! The Grant gig was phenomenal as always. I have too much to say, also as always, so I am gonna PM you.

I would recommend either 'Treasure' or 'Heaven Or Las Vegas'. They're probably their two most popular albums. Treasure was the one after Head Over Heels, and represents their earlier stuff pretty well, and Heaven Or Las Vegas is the best representation of their slightly more polished, later stuff. You can't really go wrong with Cocteaus though...it's all great!

Yeah, it sure is interesting...definitely surprising in some respects, but then they have always tried new ideas with each album. I really like it, and it still seems to be improving with every listen, although I'm not sure it will be up there with my favourite DCD albums. Hard to say really...it's not nearly as immediate as Anastasis and I feel like I'm still digesting it!

Nice! Great, we'll talk more over time. I liked your library. Just like me, you seem to go after a lot of different music and do not get stuck in the same bands. Whenever possible I will be visiting your page, from now on, to know and see a little bit of newness. I use Lastfm's recommendation tool a lot, it's a feature that keeps me coming here almost every day for about 10 years. Lastfm's interactivity is complex for many, but I like it. Greetings! \ ,, /

Yes, you are welcome back here any time for a chat! And you are welcome to ask about any bands you see in my library, if you would like any listening advice. You're correct, it is important to listen to a lot of different music, as life would be quite boring if we just listened to the same stuff all the time!

Hi! Well, all their albums are different and they have covered a lot of ground musically, so it really depends what you're into. Good shout! Still, it's hard to know what to recommend, as they are so diverse, so it really depends what takes your fancy. They started out as a dark post-punk band with some subtle ethnic influences ('Dead Can Dance'), then started to rein in the rock elements and gradually introduced more gothic and classical elements (Spleen And Ideal), before going full neo-classical/darkwave (Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun). Next they went a bit medieval and Celtic (The Serpent's Egg and especially Aion), before going for a more African influenced sound, though still with a few rock/pop elements (Into The Labyrinth and Spiritchaser). Then they did nothing for a long time, but came back a few years ago with the great Anastasis, which is a more modern sounding synthesis of various elements they had previously used. Personally, I love every album. Enjoy!

Yeah, MySpace feels like an eternity ago now, and I do miss it...probably because it was kind of a new thing, bands and fans were keen to interact back then...you don't get that so much nowadays. Seems unimaginable that someone like Mikael Akerfeldt would chat to fans online now (Twitter doesn't count), so that's actually pretty fucking cool!

You really have great taste! :) What Paradise Lost's albums would you recommend?
Actions
Replies
-
Blessedheart
Cheers! Well it really depends what you like, and there are so many to choose from...if you want some early, macabre death/doom metal, try 'Lost Paradise' or 'Gothic'. If you want something less extreme and more melodic, try 'Icon' or 'Draconian Times'. The wildcard would the controversial 'Host'...very melodic and synth-driven! Those are all earlier albums...the later stuff is good too, but probably not essential.

Actions
-

Glad you like them both! Yeah, I think the best bands are the ones who aren't afraid to try new things, as long as they can do it successfully. I wouldn't want to listen to a band making the same album again and again. Anyway, if you like those two albums, try One Second next...it's somewhere between Draconian Times and Host stylistically. Alternatively, if you want something a tad heavier/darker, try Icon.
