Hi, Chris! I haven't been here for ages. Since there is Spotify I don't check my lastfm mailbox. I found your recommendation - Russian Wives "Thinking There's a View". And you were right - I like it. To be honest - I miss good music recommendation. I hope you are well, cheers :)

Merry Christmas, Chris and a happy new year. 💖 I hope you are well. Do you still listen to music? Bruce Soords latest album is great and at the moment I also enjoy Lee Abraham as well. Pendragon are about to release a new album soon. Looking forward to that one. I miss you here on last.fm. Take care. Marina

Hi Chris, I reckon you still occasionaly visit last.fm? Though while you are not scrobbling anymore (pity!) want to let you know (if not already) the new Moongarden album. Also, I don't have problems with scrobbling at all. I use an android player (Fiio) upon which I carry most of my music and the android scrobble app is working great. On my desktop I use Jriver and works perfectly. I don't use Spotify - perhaps a problem there?

Thank you Mari. I shall look out for their new album but can't see anthing at the moment - what is it called? I know you have said previously that you don't have any issue with scrobbling. I don't use Spotify. I store all my digital music in the cloud on Google Music and have used their player (given that they have a vast library of music that I don't own) for many years with no scrobbling problems until recent months. I am not the only user with these problems. I think that last.fm's wider scrobbling capabilities are neglected both by its own developers and developers of the android apps. I have given last.fm 10 years of attention but if they can't be bothered to look after scrobbling I can't be nothered to use it. Sadly I don't think it has much of a future.

Hi Chris, the new Moongarden album is called: "Align Myself to the Universe". It's available on Bandcamp. You'r right about the future of Last.fm sadly, More and more users are leaving for the obvious reasons, which is rather sad, because I do not know a good alternative for my music exchange (besides printed stuff.

Hi Chris, In return for reminding me about Albion I wish to suggest D Project to you that I couldn't see in your library. They have a new release , their first in 4 or 5 years, "Find Your Sun" that I'm just starting to listen too, but they have a decent back catalogue as well.

Thank you Mari. Just letting you know that I shall probably be dropping out of last.fm as I am finding the scrobbling to be highly unreliable and unless it scrobbles properly it doesn't serve much purpose. I'll just rely on the play count out of GoogleMusic. I will miss the social side but that is a fraction of what it used to be because so many people I used to talk to never look at the site. A shame.

Sorry to hear that, Chris. As long as I see you scrobbles I might occasionaly send some tips such as the recent Vola Album which I like very much: Applause of a distant crowd. Migrating towards Google music manager is rather a big step I reckon. I personally use Jriver and am happy with that one.

Thank you Mari, I shall check out Vola's latest. I'm scrobbling through my mobile phone at the moment as that seems to be reliable (I fear that the desktop scrobblers are being neglected as everything goes mobile). I have streamed through Google Music for a few years now as that is where I originally loaded and maintain the soft copy of all my music. I found that the availability of so much music saved me a lot of money and now I only buy what I really want to keep. Thanks again. Cheers

Hi Chris! Just found two more new albums: "Black Strat Band - Absence" (from Greece) and "Oraton - Concentric Circles" from UK released last year. If I knew about Oraton, this album would have ended up in my top 20 if not top 10! Last week I also found another two from Sweden that are definitely worth a listen: "Octavarium - Out of Time" and "Kaleidoreal - A Life Wasted". Give them a try if you haven't. Cheers!

Two new ones you might like: "Simply They" from Canada with their outstanding melodic crossover prog album "Calendar" (spotify & cdbaby) and Missouri based proggers "Echoes of Giants" which have released their second album "The Way To Us" this August. https://echoesofgiants.bandcamp.com

You're right but there's still the feeling nobody is here to fix their issues since the changed to this new version. Also I can't get away that pop-up banner with their new cookie policy if I don't agree to all of their cookies...absolutely exasperating.
Actions

CeeJaiGee
Agreed. Have you drilled down into what is there? Astonishing number of cookies and, as you say, not worth bothering trying to manage them because some you have no choice about. A total cop-out by the last.fm programmers and the most un-user freindly implementation of the EU policy on cookies.

Ever heard of "Moonshine Blast"? No? So did I...but now I've discovered their debut album "Reality Fear" which was released back in March 2018. This young and talented proggers from France comes with very melodic crossover prog pop...not unlike "Karibow" from Germany. Please give them a try: https://moonshineblast.com

Chris, I think you are familiar with Regal Worm? They released a new album (Pig Views) available on Bandcamp (thus allowing you to listen before you buy...) Also, I do not know whether you are familiar with http://www.progstreaming.com/. It also allows you to listen to a fair amount of new prog albums on its entirety for free.

Thank you Mari - interesting album. And thank you for the listening tip. Nowadays I find most artists release their music to Google Music and most of those that don't use Bandcamp which as you say has a very useful listen before you buy feature. I still buy a fair amount of music but I only buy CDs for my most treasured artists, buying direct wherever possible.

Hi Chris, I hope you are well! It has been a while since I was here on last.fm. Yesterday I started listening again and immediately stumbeled upon Árstíðir's new album: Nivalis. I have only listened once so far and it is not as strong as Hvel, but there are some good tracks on the album. Maybe you might want to take a listen. Warm regards, Marina

Hi Chris, are you familiar with John Holden? His album Capture Light is available at Bandcamp. The Line-up, that is guest musicians used by this multi-instrumentalist on this album, is rather impressive. And the album itself is sheer beauty. I have no doubt that you love this as well. Happy listening....

Thank you Mari, giving it a try now and it certainly sounds interesting. I have just listened to PINSKI's Sound the Alarm and shall be giving it a few more spins. This is a German rock band - not particularly proggy but an interesting range of songs from prog metal to folk rock with some nice subtle compositions. Fronted by an excellent female vocalist who writes the songs and is the guitar lead.

Chris, been in Grado (Italy) two weeks ago and was surprised by a concert that never happened. Have seen by chance that there's a concert of "Gizmodrome" (with Stewart Copeland & Adrian Belew) so I bought tickets for me and my wife. Sad to say I haven't seen the band as the whole European tour of "Gizmodrome" was canceled. But finally we were happy in the end as the replacement band was no other than "Premiata Forneria Marconi". WOW, lucky me!!!

Enjoy if you haven't already.

I did reply this morning but there were problems with the site and it's not here. I simply said that you could try Elements his "best of" 4 CD set from 1985 (only 2 tracks from TB on that). Since then Music Of The Spheres and last year's Return To Ommadawn are well with checking out.

It sounds like we are of a similar age David. The sixties and seventies were a wonderful period for all types of music. I enjoyed much of the commercial stuff but loved what was happening with prog. From one of your earlier posts, you clearly know classical music. I used to listen to a lot of classical music at that time and prog seemed a natural extension of it. I still remember hearing Lizard for the first time on John Peel's radio show. My favourites were King Crimson, Genesis, Yes and Mike Oldfield. I still listen to those albums from that era and Selling England By The Pound by Genesis remains as the album I have listened to more than any other over my lifetime. The demise of prog, marriage and family life meant I lost touch until Marillion briefly rekindled my interest and then Fish left and it wasn't until the naughties that I really got back into prog. I joined last.fm in 2008 primarily to broaden my awareness of contemporary prog and it has been successful in doing so.

That said, I really dislike the new user interface and I agree that it has stifled social interaction. I kinda understand why they had to change it (maintaining the number of sort indexes that they had must have been a nightmare as the site expanded) but some of the best features went with it. There are some good features - that is why I have linked with/ followed so many other listeners because when you come across a new artist it is very helpful to know how many of your followed listeners know the artist. I have kept in touch with several of my friends but the site is in decline, masked by users who have left their scrobbling software enabled and have never deleted their account. Sadly the site has lost some of the most active listeners over the years and will never get them back. I too have thought of leaving but I still get some value from it so I remain.

Yes they're both tagged symphonic prog but I always felt early Genesis was closer to folk whereas Tillison certainly loves his jazz. If you don't know it, try The Permanent Way by Big Big Train (stupid name I know) but they get pretty close to early Genesis. BBT is the must English of prog that you can hear today and they are consistent and prolific.

Thanks for the shout. And yes I know all those artists (it’s nearly 10 years since I saw PRR – such a shame that they are no more). The old last.fm user interface encouraged more social interaction because of the invite/ acceptance process but now you just click to link. There is definitely overlap between our libraries but yours is a much broader mix of artists and you have to wonder how 93% is derived! I’ve always been a bit of a prog nut (right back to the 70s) and am pleased to see that the likes of Steven Wilson, Andy Tillison, Mariuz Duda and Bruce Soord keeping the genre alive. With your wide eclectic musical taste I doubt that you are after recommendations but, if you are, let me know. Cheers

I'm probably feeling the same tbh. I listened to Arena first and hoped for something special then listened to Lunatic Soul and that impressed me more. I've then listened to Subsignal and Spock's Beard on shuffle and am enjoying Subsignal more and suspect I'll play it more. I don't dislike Spock's Beard, they've just never had anything that I keep going back to play so to speak. Arena is growing on me as I play it again and start to appreciate some of the tracks a bit more. All said, they are all decent releases that will receive repeated plays.

A stark comparison with the new Gazpacho Mari. It sounded interesting on first listen and gets better with every listen. Thank you for drawing my attention to Tonochrome. And DPRP? I have visited the site in the past but not on a regular basis and, on closer examination, this looks like a good source of reviews - will check out a few and shall probably visit more regularly in the future.
