I noticed that too, I think with Mastodon, Pain of Salvation and probably a few others. The stuff is hardly inventive especially when you consider it's the now-trendy mid-life crisis of metalheads. I just wish the stuff was at least pretty good. It also irks me that all these guys, probably especially Mikael, think they're doing something rebellious, because ironically, it's kinda lame in a childish way to me by this point.

It's basically as good (or meh) as I expected? Then again I thought the production would be a lot better. I'll give it a second go around if I find a vinyl rip; maybe slightly better dynamics will help out some tracks. Still Life/BWP/Damnation/GR are all masterpieces to me, so I still sorta consider myself a fanboy, but with less pride these days. They're just an ok heavy prog band now. They chose being different over being unique, though I bet Akerfeldt and his new wave of fans think they're about as unique as you can get these days. lol. I think i like it more than Pale Cummunion, but only because I was way more disappointed when that album came out. I guess I still had expectations 2 years ago. Frankly, Deathspell Omega is the only metal band I'm even super interested in these days (no idea if you'd like them).

I'm probably never going to use Last.fm regularly ever again, but I wanted to sign in again so I could say hi. I also needed to tell you that I just got my hands on a Beyerdynamic DT1350 for portable use (with an amp), and the Sennheiser HD650s with a Maverick Audio Tube Magic D1 desktop amp/DAC. One of the first albums I tested them out on was the Blu-Ray audio of Grace For Drowning you mailed me years ago. It reminded me why I become an audio nerd in the first place. Thanks again for that gift. I hope you've been well, David.

That's a very reassuring thought. Yeah It's not a secret to anyone that Last.fm has been through tough times in the last years and migration to Spotify sounds really feasible, because they already integrated scrobbling to the client, so the clearly know Last.fm's potential and appreciate the site. What really annoys me more than anything though is how easy it would've been for Last.fm to mitigate their losses, all they had to do was give the users some kind of real incentive to subscribe, (really, when the subscriber Radio was removed it all went down to shitter) like giving us more customization options for the profile page, like bigger avatars, backgrounds, different coloring schemes, you name it. If sites like Tumblr has taught us anything it's that people have an insatiable need to express themselves and Last.fm just did not offer us that to the extent that would've brought in real traffic. Last.fm has been playing the role of a second banana ever since the advent of social media.

Dave, good to hear from ya! Yeah the new Last.fm is just about the worst thing ever conceived since Chad Kroeger. I have never been so irate about something, I dont know where to even begin. The worst part is that the community feedback is unanimously negative, but the devs wont listen to feedback. Its infuriating beyond belief. If you ever find a proper alternative to lastfm, let me know. I'm so done with this horseshit.

I've just masturbated (violently) to teh new 'Hoff song and the ensuing jizz explosion was so massive that all my neighbours were killed. Firstly the cops wanted to arrest me forever, but when I told them how it happened, they let me go. So I told those assholes to fuck off. TRUE STORY

Hey again. Based on yours and others' feedback, I've added a "classic Universal Scrobbler" theme to the new tool now, which you will probably prefer. Check it out, let me know your thoughts.

I don't think I'm going to see them again to be honest. They played Advent and bunch of other old songs, but even then, the whole gig just lacked all energy and emotion. Mike and the band are starting to get old and look fed up. As a matter of fact, I saw Anathema only couple of weeks prior and the difference in peformance is like night and day. Anathema's youthful exuberance lifted everyone in the room, they engaged the audience and there was great energy, but Opeth just kind of stood there, like they couldn't give a shit. Apples and oranges I guess but when I go to a show, I don't just want to hear the music, I want to have a good time and Opeth was a bore. I guess I just prefer listening their music in a dark room with headphones, while stroking my soft furry kitten and eating hot melted cheese.

Oh lol, that's great. Talking about gig stories, there was this really stupid one from the last Opeth gig. The band was playing The Devil's Orchard and near the end there's the quiet part where Mikael sings "God is dead..." the venue was dead quiet, you could hear a pin drop, but then one guy in middle of the floor suddenly goes "Nope." in this really monotone voice. He didn't even say it loudly, just in normal speaking voice, but because it was so quiet everyone could hear him. I just bursted into laughter and I felt terrible because it was so stupid haha, but the guy's delivery was just amazing.

Thanks for your thoughts. I responded on the Universal Scrobbler shoutbox to probe a bit more about this. The new site has a few extra pages to introduce it and make the tool a bit more formal, but the functional pages are still just as simple and quick I would hope. Are you experiencing performance issues? Where? And what do you find difficult to understand? I've tried to actually do more to help people understand it - giving the site context with the intro page and instructions on each functional page to explain how it works. Seeing you donated previously you're very welcome to a free upgrade of the new one if you'd like. But ideally I would love to understand how I can change the new one to make it a more enjoyable experience for you.

Hey there. You said the new Universal Scrobbler sucks - would love to know more details about why you think so, or is it just the restrictions?

Yeah I remember seeing the SiT cover in a record store once and thought it was pretty cool, but for me the best Maiden album cover has always been Powerslave. I love the detail, architecture and epic scale. As for Heritage, I think the cover is one of the few redeeming qualities of the album. The heads in the tree are a bit goofy, but overall I like the use of colors. I think Travis did a good job creating a piece of art that complemented the change in Opeth's sound.

Dude, I know. I love when a band has some kind of striking visual style to go with the music, just like Yes had with Roger Dean or Tool with Alex Grey. It pisses me off when a band makes an awesome album, but then the cover is a picture of a dog licking it's bollocks or something.

You can see him singing on the music video. ¶ I agree that none of the live albums outshine their studio counterparts, but can you think of any stand-alone live PF performances that are clearly better than the original recordings? My all-time favorite by far is this performance of Careful With That Axe Eugene from Earl's Court '73, it's just so dark, dripping with atmosphere and the way they build the song up to the intense climax is just orgasmic. I've always loved the darker side of PF.

I couldn't agree more. Like most people, I had some kind of preconceptions about what Pink Floyd album should sound like and disliked the new album initially on that basis, but seeing as how I already knew Roger wasn't involved and Rick was six feet under, I guess I didn't really know what to expect. If you break it down like you just did and analyze it on it's own merits, it's quite amazing. Still, I wish Gilmour would have sang more on the album. His voice is clearly still in shape, so in my opinion it was a wasted opportunity to leave majority of the album as instrumental when you've got such a classic vocalist available. All gripes aside, it's still good. I rare it 3 flying pigs out of 5!

I'm honestly still not too familiar with Lunatic Soul. Last.fm suggests that I've been listening it for a little bit, but I honestly can't recall. I'll have to check it out for sure. ¶ How do you feel about the new "Pink Floyd" album? After the first listen I really disliked it and thought it was pretty pointless, but now it's growing on me. Just reminds me exactly why David Gilmour inspired me to pick up the guitar. His tone is so iconic.

Hey man. I knew it was you Dave, I was just hesitant to contact you because I thought you'd get banned again haha! I have like three of your previous accounts on my friends list already. I always wondered how you got into trouble on this site, the concept of getting "banned" is really alien to me because I've never had any problems in 6 years I've been here, but seeing as you mentioned the Opeth shoutbox, I'm not too surprised. You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Anyway, glad to have you back, hopefully for good this time. ¶ I've been great, spent the last year studying graphic design, just moved into a new apartment few days ago and I'm planning to go back to school next year, maybe somewhere abroad.

I was thinking the same thing about having the cherries popped by Opeth, but I've seen a few comments implying that some huge fans of the album are also into 70's prog (though I don't know how deep into it they are). Then again maybe half or more of people who have said that don't seem to like the album very much too. PC feels like such a tribute to prog rock that it doesn't end up offering much substance to the same genre. Also, "hazard" was just a moniker my probably 12 year old self thought was cool when I needed to come up with an email. I wanted it to be something like "biohazard" which of course was already taken, so I swapped bio with my initials, and now it's my default internet name.

In retrospect it seems like a brilliant failsafe or defense mechanism against brickwalling, I wish someone would develop similar tech for poor CDs. Also I'm curious: gimme your opinion on Pale Communion. You've probably read mine somewhere on this site, and while I don't hate it or think it's shit, I do like Heritage more. Heritage did feel like glue and tape was holding it together sometimes but it had more memorable songs and memorable, stand out sections for me. Plus its 2 bonus tracks are great and was hoping PC would have them. I really like Elysian Woes, plus I can enjoy Eternal Rains will Come and Goblin, yet so far the other 5 songs do just about nothing for me. I agree with you on what you've written before, the fact that these albums have to "grow" on you instead of being instant hitters is disappointing, especially from a band who normally just astounds me from the get go.
