Every mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive He stood six-foot-six and weighed two-forty-five Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to big John (Big John, big John) Big bad John (big John) Nobody seemed to know where John called home He just drifted into town and stayed all alone He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy And if you spoke at all, you just said, "Hi" to Big John Somebody said he came from New Orleans Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand Sent a Louisiana fellow to the promised land, big John (Big John, big John) Big bad

I definitely will, he's an absolutely fantastic songwriter and I love his voice/lyrics. Where's a good place to start with his solo stuff for a newbie?

-
Doofy-
The solo debut '60 Watt Silver Lining' is the best but very much of a piece and it might be a bit less approachable than 'The Invisible Man' and 'Hey Mr Ferryman'. Those are the three to start with I'd say but nearly all of them are great (skip 'Candy Ass' to the end though, a bit weak that one).

Thank you, kind sir. Will listen to them tonight after I've finished listening to "Everclear" - what an absolutely staggering album that is.

Hi Doof. Thanks for the follow back. Feel free to remove my former account "Sputnikdrifter" as it's dead. I managed to accidentally rescrobble somewhere around 1100 tracks so I've abandoned that account unfortunately. Still trying to keep my head up after such an unfortunate accident :')

Going hard on Andrew Bird right now eh? Coincidentally I just saw him live the other night - solid show, his violin playing and whistling translated well live but I still can’t get fully on board with his “thing”, feels very polished and “performed” to me.

Check my list on RYM - 'band of the week'. Each week I try out or revisit an artist I haven't played too much since I started scrobbling. Andrew Bird was this week's artist - and yes, I agree, there's something holding me back from fully embracing his style. It is a bit mannered and cerebral. Only thing I would say is I don't agree with the consensus on what his best work is...I like Break it Yourself, Noble Beast and Hands of Glory. If you want to delve into his discog start with those - think they'd be more your thing too ;)

You should give the Micropop exactly two more full listens and then review it for your RYM hall of fame

I was actually thinking about that, I did say there'd be strange inclusions in that list and sure, a 99 song album that qualifies after three listens would be one. I imagine 'Donuts' and 'Commercial Album' will both get there one day too. Loopholes! My perfect system is broken! ;D

I've just realized that Kelvingrove Baby is the most-scrobbled album of the '90s by both of us...!

I've still only heard Kelvingrove because it's the only one that's on Spotify (though I see Sweet Deceit is on Apple Music... which I'm tempted to download for that reason alone lol)

Haven't really listened to him actually, though I've been meaning to for some time! I remember seeing him play "Chicago" live on TV (I forget which show) and enjoying his performance

Been down since late Sunday, as for the article; keeping mum on it. A three parter -- the first of which will be ready to go once the site is live and Jom is able to publish it.

Last week was a good week! The weakness with LastFM is you get rewarded for listening to albums with short songs - J Dilla 'Donuts', Johnny Cash 'Folsom Prison', Avalanches 'Since I Left' and Paul Buchanan 'Mid Air' all have a lot tracks over a short run time so I think that's what bumped the figures to crazy levels ;D

Haha I'll shoot you another code, don't worry. Actually Doof, let me know an address and I'll send a CD your way if you like. I am not recording yet, still in the process of writing and figuring out what i want to do next. My plan for a new release this year failed completely lol.

Well I got to get some work done but it was quite a sad and lonely day without Sput, not gonna lie. How is that script coming up?
Actions
-
Doofy-
Well, the script is more 'ten scripts'...of which five are finished to a second draft sorta level. I'm half way through episode six...and then I have the rest as just scene breakdowns which all need fleshing out/dialogue written for. It's an ambitious project...ideally I'd like to write six ten episode seasons! But once I've finished this first season I'm going to try and pimp it out a few places - think I have something (that's what they all say!)

Have to work in a couple of hours so I'm going to catch some extra sleep before then - afterwards perhaps actually get some writing done, either for the folk series or for November's guide.

The only way we can prevent it from happening is by getting Boney to rate that Shiina Ringo AND the proper introduction of yet another 5 to your catalogue. Dream Syndicate is a proper 3.

That it is. Async - Remodels comes out on the 1st so I'm interested to see how outside hands influence his works, and what has been previewed so far leads me to believe it will be a stellar remix album.

Sput is constipated again, so what else is new... Here's a radio interview with Matt Johnson you might find interesting. "A Quietus Hour Special With Matt Johnson Of The The" http://thequietus.com/articles/23513-the-the-matt-johnson-interview-podcast-radio

Whoa, we started listening to the Courtney Barnett/Kurt Vile at almost exactly the same time!

Doofy-
It's pretty good too, the early songs I was never sure up to half way through the track...but by the end of the song they'd always won me over. I'm not sure their voices are a match made in heaven but the vibe/guitar playing just carries it all through. Still think the Vile cover 'Peepin' Tom' is the best - Courtney turns that into a bit of a classic.

I'm not feeling the reviews so much right now, go for it. I've got the day off today but working on this TV script idea thats taking up a stupid amount of my time rather than a review. I do want to hit 100 reviews at some point but I'm not in a rush, I think in terms of Sput staff I have been cast out from the fold a bit, my last lists and reviews didn't even get featured :D

To be quite honest, I was going to request the Ariel Pink to be featured although I figured you'd do that yourself or it'd be up eventually - and it wasn't. For the most part, when I do something, I usually make my intentions known and as soon as I post a review, it's usually featured right away (see the LCD/Bowie/Ryuichi reviews). I think for the most part, you just gotta be connected with the higher ups. My advice is to start posting more in the contribs section in the forums and let your plans be known, it really works.
