Saw your comment about finding a copy of the Red Weather album by Leigh Stephens. It's been repressed in recent years!

Hello John! I was a friend in the past (same username: sweetremus); but dropped membership. I'm back. Still jazz heavy and buying vinyl of all genres! You're a New Yorker. I have a question? Can you give me any personal knowledge (maybe experience) on some No Wave action in the late seventies? I really dig the avant garde horn from James Chance and the organic guitar sounds from other No Wave groups (i.e. DNA, in particular Arto Lindsay, Mars, and like acts). I own a few great records, Brian Eno, produced in the late seventies and other no wave selects, but vinyl and internet research can only get one so far, eh! I wonder why this experimental genre fizzled so fast (the majority of the pioneers are still alive, unlike other tragic stricken musicians i love, who mostly parish early from personal causes and then soon their music follows [well, for most])? Food for thought! Greetings from the "hi-five" state (Michigan)!

Incidentally, trying to explain Harry Partch to people is about as hard as trying to explain later-period Sun Ra, alien to what most would consider to actually be described as music!

That is most definitely Robert Wyatt near the top of my chart, I loved the Softs when he was with them and I love just about everything he's done since - Matching Mole, sadly short-lived due to Robert's accident, all the solo career and all the collaborations with other people like Kevin Ayers, Henry Cow, Hatfield & The North etc. All of those I mentioned are in some way connected to the so-called Canterbury scene, which is basically English eccentrics and/or whimsical, sometimes quite playful prog rock. I'll take that over the more showy EPL or Yes any day. By the way, my avatar is not Robert Wyatt or a close relative, I just like the idea of Karl Marx flashing a peace sign. It's thanks to Last.FM that I came to Harry Partch, up until a couple of years ago I'd never even heard of him, but there's something about his almost-mystical, spiritual, ritualistic ancient/modern music that I really love. I think he is a true genius and visionary. Happy listening, Bob

Saw your shout about Johnny Hodges, I have to agree with you. Although I love most styles in jazz, Jeep is right up there for me. Great selection of jazz on your charts!

Wow, thanks! I'm still an aspiring listener, so it's good to hear that. I think I can tell by your Duke plays that we could get along.

-I think you meant East-West or work song. Probably East-West. one of The most band-ass songs in the world by far That song was a wake up call for that whole generation of musicians and its totally underrated makes me sad but I'm glad you know who I speak of . Plus good looks on MC5 I looked into them and I was very satisfied.

I found a Village Voice article about him where they describe his solos as "warmly insistent" and I thought that's about the best way to put it. I feel like if he could have stuck around, he would have been the bridge between the East and West Coast schools of the time. He's not afraid of being pretty or difficult, or to try and be both at once. Mostly he just goes with the same unwearied joy that seems to drive all the best parts of a Kerouac novel. It's almost impossible to listen to these live performances always ending with him and Dexter Gordon and not be absolutely thrilled and exhausted by it.

I wanted to be friends with you because of all the nice things you said about Wardell Gray for no reason other than there's a page for Wardell Gray on last fm. Lately he's been my favorite tenor player. There's something about him nobody can touch. I'm trying to learn how to play like that.

It's a pretty good tune. I especially like the really frenetic version on Black Beauty.

It will take time for you to recover fully. Just take one step at a time. All good here - I played at the EAR festival in London and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am currently working on my third album.

Hi, John. Sometime in the last year my depressive overtook my manic and I have been lying (very) low. The Logitech Squeezebox on which I do the bulk of my listening mysteriously stopped scrobbling last month (having previosuly been intermittent), reducing my web "presence" even further. I am currently reading a book, "The Poets of Tin Pan Alley" which -- while hardly groundbreaking -- is interesting and informative. I trust you are well?

Yes, John fewer worries. All the scabs are because of nerves mostly. And not just inside, and you look like a young man, believe me:) Have you tried listening to records by old players? This is probably a much more atmospheric than a modern turntable. I wonder whether there is a commercially available original vynil swing and 30's sweet band? Stan Getz, good old cool!

I hope that all behind. Please be careful with your health, so this will not happen. You have a wonderful age, when life is just beginning Do you collect vinyl and whether you have something like a phonograph or gramophone?
