That's a good question because there's been a lot of good albums this year. Absolutely DHG is up there for me. Other contenders would be Willoos, Epheles, and Maȟpíya Lúta, with honourable mentions to Solar Temple, Woe Bather, Sól án Varma, Iskandr, and the two Fluisteraars EPs. What's on your radar for AOTY?

Ah, new album from Epheles. Souviens-toi from some years ago was great. Not easy to keep track with new releases these days!

That Ruim album is definitely very good. I haven't loved the last few Enslaved albums, even though I am a fan of their progressive work. The Urfaust and Venusberg releases were quite good too (I'm still waiting on some new Departure Chandelier material). I will check out Manii and Spirit Possession now. A couple other worthwhile mentions are the new Laster and Slowdive albums.

Ok, I should check out that Slowdive. Have been avoiding it despite seeing Neil Halstead solo this summer. Laster is new for me, will check too

Not too odd. The BM tracks on that one are good; I'm just not a fan of the fact that 50% of it is ambient (or a fan of ambient in general).

Thanks! Same goes for you; I like to see diversity among people's musical tastes. The BM bands I've been listening a lot to the last couple of years and would recommend would be: Abkehr, Adzalaan, Aerdryk, Burier, Departure Chandelier, Fluisteraars, Grey Aura, Horrid Litany, Ifernach, Invunche, Kringa, Lamp of Murmuur, Ossaert, Panzerfaust, Solar Temple, Somme, Turia, Uškumgallu, and Weathered Crest. The Dutch scene is my favourite at the moment, and the Austrian and Danish ones are producing some great material too.

Do you have any recommendations for me… Also, on a more important question… How do you go about CDs? I no longer buy them because metal albums on CDs cost too much but I still buy pop and rock CDs since they’re cheap as dirt and I can get a good CD rip. I’ve also been looking for CDs of Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and David Allan Coe for my library but can’t find any. Do you get CDs at a bookstore or what because that’s where I usually get mine unless I’m lazy enough to order them which try not to do.

I had a huge CD collection growing up but stopped buying them (and vinyl) years ago once I started having limited physical space. Now I mainly listen to my mp3 collection or through Bandcamp, and support artists through there or by going to shows/buying merch. So I'm a little out of touch with where to get cheap CDs these days. For recommendations, see my reply to the shout below.

Depending what you're looking for/into, here's a few bands that have been getting a lot of play time from me over the last year or so: Abkehr, Absent in Body, Adzalaan, Aerdryk, Burier, Departure Chandelier, Frayle, Grey Aura, Hoaxed, Horrid Litany, Ifernach, Invunche, Lamp of Murmuur, Ossaert, Solar Temple, Somme, Uškumgallu, Weathered Crest, White Abbey, Wolvennest (to name a few).

No worries. I'm a metalhead first and foremost, but I cut my teeth on so many other genres as a youngster before I discovered (extreme) metal 20+ years ago, and I like to change it up based on my mood, the setting, how stoned I am, etc.

Always welcome, thank you. I was definitely expecting death metal with a name like that, but am pleasantly surprised. I will have to listen to the album you mentioned, as I can only find The Ascent of Deimos on Bandcamp, but they sound a marriage of the chaotic atmosphere of modern USBM (Ash Borer, Krallice, etc) with 2nd wave BM synths.

Hi! Since you're open for recommendations: it looks like you didn't come across White Abbey yet. It's a post-Lunar Aurora project by Whyrhd. First album was released last October and it seems it went rather unnoticed. It's a great album though. Based on your charts I think you'd like it.

You weren't joking about that Ifernach album! I regret neglecting checking him out before, it SLAYS. I was immediately surprised by the sheer intensity of those vocals (!) Sounds utterly rabid, it truly deserves the Hieronymous Bosch cover. Besides that one, do any other live-recorded albums like that come to mind? I can't get enough of the stuff. The Abkehr EP you mentioned is killer as well, for how traditional it is, it has lots of character - - it oozes of this distant, foreboding atmosphere. I get the feeling you might like the new Concrete Winds, given your recent thrash-kick.

No problem at all, and thanks for the support. I'm not an ambient fan either, but the first track of that Silent Thunder EP is still intriguing if it is, in fact, totally improvised. Forteresse definitely got even better once they added a live drummer, and I really hope they release another album soon since the it's been 5 years since Recits. I will definitely check out Stilla, as that's another one I haven't heard before. I did end up listening to Concrete Winds and oh man, that shit was like a jackhammer to the brain stem.

Wow, totally missed that it's supposed to be improvised - that would be fucking impressive if true. Does Lamp of Murmuur compare? I avoided his music assuming he was part of the Perverse Homage roster, I just realized they're completely unrelated. Shame it's been a while since Recits, but at least they're more or less prolific. I'm listening to the debut right now and I'm pleasantly surprised. I find it quite interesting that they were doing these dirgeful, distant melodies way before Mgla! You can almost feel the room drop 10 degrees. Criminally underrated, goes beyond me how they aren't more popular. Glad you liked CW! Everything Sepulchral Voice releases ranges from great to perfection, same can be said about Nordvis. Which made me notice.... You haven't listened to Panphage? You really need "Storm" in your life.

I would highly recommend LoM. The guy behind it is legit, writes some amazing riffs, and isn't afraid to bring in his other influences to the music (especially on his recent Submission & Slavery and Punishment & Devotion EPs) . LoM has been super hyped, especially with the tapes being really limited and going for exorbitant amounts on Discogs, but definitely has put out some of the best BM in the past few years.

I don't really get the Darkspace-connection, but the sound is rather special and the person behind it is from Utrecht, which seems to become more and more of a marker for quality in black metal.

Hell, I love seeing that amazing Akasha album (which, thanks to the gods, you recommended me) next to Acid Bath! It truly is an incredible album even though his material before it didn't blow me away all that much. Glad you're still enjoying it. The two AB full lengths are two of my favourite albums of all time. I've lost count the number of times I've listened to them over the years. I haven't heard of Sielunvihollinen but I will definitely check them out!

His earlier work didn't phase me either, but that album really sounds just like the cover - pure bloodthirsty lunacy. I know, right?! I still remember the first time I heard Cassie Eats Cockroaches, instant chills, so wonderfully fucked up. Let me know if you do! I was ready to stop checking out new releases but Sielunvihollinen, Escumergament, and Havuukrunu forced me to reconsider, hah. Have you discovered anything good lately? It's getting harder and harder, it seems.

I've been mainly exploring the Dutch BM rabbit hole recently (Turia, Laster, Iskandr, Solar Temple, Lubbert Das, Ossaert), as I am quite late to that party. I did recently discover Abkehr though, which is some great angry BM from Germany.

You were talking about languages that suit black metal vocals, I should add that you mustn't rule out Italian, somehow it sounds pretty powerful. Unfortunately the lyrics tend to gravitate towards the far right but if you can stomach that, Spite Extreme Wing goes especially recommended for black metal rollercoaster albums and oh what fun is Frangar's track Inno alla Decima MAS.

Haha, that she is! Hmm, depends what you're looking for. My tastes are all over the place. Especially recently. For BM, I've been listening to a lot of Lamp of Murmuur, Ash Pool, Departure Chandelier, Akasha, Angst Skvadron, Forteresse, and Ifernach recently. For non-BM, I've been digging Kordhell (Mick of Anaal Nathraakh's witch house side project), Deaf Radio (Greek QOTSA worship), and Tribulation, as well as revisiting some classics (Acid Bath, Swans and Isis).

Hey man, sorry for the late reply. I've only had the time to properly check out Deaf Radio, Angst Skvadron, and Akasha, but everything is fucking KILLER. Admittedly, I never check out people's recommendations, but I'm utterly obsessed with Deaf Radio now, Akasha's rabidness is right up my alley and those Angst Skvadron riffs are just mindblowing. I'll check out the rest soon, much appreciated! Amazing taste.

Awesome! Glad you're digging DR and AS. I love psychedelic black metal, so discovering AS serendipitously through Last.fm was a great discovery. I'll check out Reveal and Pseudogod - thanks. Yep. Well, I'm not sure if you're aware but there is an alternate version of that floating around the internet currently but it's labeled as "Inneres Licht" by Paysage d'Hiver for some reason. Anywho, long story short, I was wondering if you've heard this other verison. I'm quite certain it's not a demo version or anything, it sounds more like a cover done by another artist. The tone and progression are different and so is the production style. And the problem is I have no idea who's behind this supposed cover of that song. I suppose you'll only be able to offer your opinion if you've actually heard it though, haha.
