I also didn't buy JM being the age she was supposed to potray when an adult Chiron visits her but hey, that's a testament to her genes, isn't it? lol. NJ is a House music capital. You hear house beats blasting out of cars out there. The weekly parties on the Pier are reallt dope. It's a mostly older crowd but still a very nice vibe nonetheless. I'd imagine the Chi has a slew of similar events.

lol. It's all good...Yeah, the LA crowd isn't the most hyped or fun to be around HENCE why I usually went out of town for shows (Orange County, Vegas, the Bay Area). lol! I actually wound up seeing TWO screenings of Moonlight. One at the Arc Light in Hollywood that was followed up with a Q&A with the film's stars and another at the WGA theater in Beverly Hills which was followed up with a Q&A with Barry Jenkins, the film's director. Both screenings were cool but the latter was better because it was free. :p Wow, I'd love to hear Tarrell's journey of writing the play that the film is based on. The movie is probably one of my favorites of the year. You didn't like Janelle's performance? It was her very first film role hence why she may have came off pretty flat.

GAM hasn't appeared at Agape since I've been attending but her mother is super talented. She is also a very spirited women. you get a good vibe from being around her. Common (whose new album is pretty good BTW) attends One Chruch, which is a very Hollywood church. LL used to go to my old church, Faithful Bible Central Church in Inglewood. I bumped into Bobby Brown at Agape two weekends ago. Did you see Moonlight? I love house and that is anotehr reason why i can't wait to get back east. NJ is the second house capital to Chi-Town. lol. I'd have so much fun at the house parties on the pier in the summer. You might like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh9B0I88u7Q

Overall, people in LA are a mixed bag. All the hype about them being fake, shallow, materialistic wannabees is very true but only up to a point. Once you get away from the industry areas, you'll find that people are still somewhat standoffish but noticably more personable. LA is a very poor city outside of the few rich parts you see on TV so the culture informs that. It's also Mexico ...that's right, I'd say from experience that a good 65-70% of the pop. here is Mexican. So, the ethnic diversity isn't the strongest. l can go on but overall, I'd say LA is an okay place to visit but don't expect to have your mind blown or breath taken away. It's a fairly dull place once you get past the veneer. Plus, you will be stuck in traffic for the majority of the day anyway. :p Lance is a type of R&B singer. His debut is the most experimental thing TDE's ever released and I will admit it has taken me a few listens to "get".

Yes, living in NYC is not for the faint of heart! lol. Myself, I prefer to live nearby in Jersey and then commute in. That way, I have the best of both worlds--the most opportune city in the world to work and play in AND have my peace of mind to dwell in. I'm at the stage of life where I can't be bothered with urban living anymore. That's a huge reason why I am not feeling LA. Yooo, the rats have their own community! I used to see a crew of them near the F train! lol. I have so much music on the backburner this year that it's not even funny. I did listen to Chance, Frank, Glasper, etc. but didn't absorb them like I could have. I have just been so busy. Ok, LA crowds *cracks fingers and clears throat* they can be very dead and corny. Like, you don't see people getting down and just vibing at a LA show. Everyone's either on their phone or just standing looking stuck up.

The Trp are due for a followup to Yahada!!! I would love to see an image of them/him. Part of me wonders if they were an assortment of sessionists recording under that name. I wanna know! lmao. I'll hook you up with the Josef link. Never heard of Durand Bernarr until your shout. Dopeness! Georgia Anne Muldrow's mom is the choir director at a church I go to. the music is jamming there! Her stepdad is the pastor and he's really enlightening. Oh, I've worked in human services and education on and off for a few years and I know all about the behind the scenes politics and how much crazier the staff/co-workers are than the people you're supposed to help. It's so sad how corrupt and petty that field is. I plan on launching a production company back home--a huge reason why I'm going back--but I will probably get a high payed salary gig for a year or two to raise funds. We'll see. Have you seen the movie Moonlight?

Jamila's album is easily one of my favorites of the year. No filler. Did you like Chance's Coloring Book release? I found it sorely disappointing upon release but maybe it could sound better months later. His MCD festival sounds dope tho! You can tell that he knows how to put on a show. Speaking of Chance, he will appear at Tyler's Camp Flog Gnaw festival here in LA in three weekends. A friend and I are thinking of splitting the $218 ticket and going. The lineup is just too good but I don't know about the crowd. LA crowds are notoriously wack and Tyler's fanbase can be a bit much from what I hear but hey. It's either CFN or Badu (who will also be at CFN) solo the following night in Orange County, CA. We'll see. I had a feeling AP would be super congested this year. Its popularity is growing. Perhaps going to CFN can make up for not going to this year's. I'm feeling Jimi's music. It's very abstract but still soulful. Are you up on Lance Skiiwalker?

I apologize for the delay in responses. Things have been hectic. lol. Can you beleive that I STILL haven't paid Chicagoland a visit? I was looking at the ten most populated cities in the US and the Chi, Houston and San Antonio are the only ones I haven't visited, That will change soon though. The Chi and New Orleans are my top 2 cities that I need to visit. San Fransciso and Oakland is the third but since I'm in Cali, I'm hoping to visit in the next week or two. Gates' revamped bank sounds cool. That's more the reason I need to visit soon. The Chi seems filled with so much culture. I love Avery's work. You make a live Nao experience sound quite appealing! lol. Yup, I was deciding between NYC and LA so what did I do? I did both cities. I was in NY/NJ for 6 months and then moved west. A year in, I'm so ready to go back to the east. I plan on staying there permanently.

One more thing (I promise): I don't know if you're into cosmic jazz but Josef Leimberg, one of the key musicians on To Pimp A Butterfly, released an album a couple days ago, it features Bilal, Kendrick, Georgia Anne Muldrow and others. Let me know if you need links.

Did you attend AfroPunk this year? Sadly, I couldn't since I was stuck on the West Coast. i was not happy about that, actually, since I go ever year. But hey, there's always next year. How is Jimi Nxir's release? I've been curious about his stuff since I heard a really nice track of his on a comp a few years ago.

Chicago is on my list alongside New Orleans and the SF Bay Area as cities I NEED to visit. I agree about the Chi being underrated. In my view, it's always been on the same level as NYC and LA in terms of cultural clout; black culture, especially. Do you also notice that most of the celebrated black music geniuses are from the Midwest? Draw a line from Stevie to MJ to Prince to Miles Davis (Chi-Town!) to Curtis Mayfield to shit, even, Dilla (and sooooo many more). Solange really put her heart and soul in her new album. It's hype is so justified and refreshing. Wow, you saw Nao live? I didn't even know that she toured. I couldn't get into her album on first listen but I'll try again. Her voice reminds me of Deniece Williams' (another Midwestern native). Me? I've been alright. Just wrapping up the loose ends here in LA so I can go back home to the east and really set up shop. How about you? I love Jamila's Heavn. It's definitely in the same vein as A Seat at the Table.

Hey!! Yeah I do have Instagram. I'll message you my IG handle :D How was AFROPUNK this year? I feel the same way you do about the art scene in NYC; it definitely inspired me to check out the art scene more in Chicago too. Unfortunately, recently all I do is work and sleep to the point where I forgot about KAYTANADA BEING HERE :( Also, can we figure out a time where you, me and jdotperiod can all hang out and just talk about music? hahaha. It is. I drove 3 hrs. from Hampton, VA to Washington, DC to see J*Davey when I was in undergrad. It was worth it tho. They put on an incredible show and I even got to kiss Briana on the cheek! I'll watch both seasons of BMJ on Watchseries this weekend. It took me years to get ito Van Hunt too. I initially took him for a neo-soul knockoff but years later, I saw the light. He's very underrated. It doesn't seem like D is doing a full US tour yet. Tix were only around $65-100. I think most purchased the tix at the Apollo's box office. Where are the free concerts held in the Chi? I'll definitely keep you filled in! I saw HK at Central Park a couple summers ago. They were just beginning to pop but they tour down the house. I even got to chit chat w/ Nai after the show. She called me "sir". It was so sweet. LOL.

Did Nick have a band? Sadly, I haven't been to any concerts so far this year. I will definitely hit a BUNCH this summer. I tried so hard to get tix for D'Angelo's Valentines Day date at the Apollo but tix sold out before they even hit Ticketmaster. It was crazy! LOL. I'll be in NYC for the summer. A LOT of really good artists have free shows in the city's parks throughout the entire season so I plan on seeing many of them.

I accept that I'm a polymath. LOL. Music, writing and TV/film production is my true realm tho. The constant trips from the 'burbs to the city definitely add up. It can become tedious too. I'm tired of taking 2.5 hr trips from CT to NYC. (It takes an hour to drive from my currrent town to a Metro North railroad stop; then an addition 90 minutes for the train ride to NYC). I need to finally watch BMJ! I love a good dramatic series so one w/ a BF lead is definitely a coup. There's been a lot of big name releases that've dropped already this year but I dunno, most haven't really left much of an impression on me. VH's new one is very solid. It less rock-orientated than his last release but still very eclectically soulful. I need to see him love one of these days. You saw Nick Hakim live?!?! *low key hates* He had a residency in NYC for a while but I didn't catch it. :(

I also found Empire's season finale to feel a little rushed. It was also a tad over-the-top but with the series being a nighttime soap opera, that's not really unexpected, I guess. :) Is it me or has this year been a slow one for music so far? Hopefully, things pick up more in May.

While being a writer or musician has always been my real dream job, I've toyed with the idea of being a chef, lawyer, pharmacist and corporate guru. I've since discovered that none of those professions are my true passion whatsoever. Since I've graduated college, I've worked as a teacher, in other positions in education, store manager and a corporate guy. None were my thing even if they kept the bills paid. Now, it's time for me to follow my dreams AND keep my bills paid. :) I'll be passing Chicago on my way across the country to LA. I can't wait to see the city since it's one of the few metropolises in the US that I haven't visited. The suburbs are the worst for young, single, creative types. I'd know. At least, you're close to a world-class city. In CT, I'm stuck w/ a bunch of nothing. Sure, NYC and Boston are both 2 hrs. away but the distance doesn't make them as accessible as the nearby options. I still haven't watched HTGAW or Scandal. Do you watch Being Mary Jane?

My 'dream job' has flucacted over the years but honestly, it's always been to be a professional writer. I long to be a creative who makes a living from his art. That's my lifelong career goal. I've learned that 9 to 5 jobs are not for me. I abhor the politics, drama and the feeling of being a cog in the machine. I also wouldn't mind getting another degree but I do mind the debt that would come with it. LOL. I also would love to travel and meet people through my work. I have a feeling that I eventually will. Are you getting to know Chicago better? The city seems to have a lot to offer for creative types. Are you a native? I want to get into TV drama. I feel like the success of Empire, Scandal, HTGAWM and other shows finally shows that Hollywood is ready to embrace talent--both in front and behind the camera--of color. That said, it's time for me to pursue this goal. Here's to hoping that AS are one of the headliners of August's AP, which I plan on flying out for!

That's cool. LA seems like the place to be for young creative types. NYC's prices are too high for the common 'struggling artist' nowadays. The job that I'm leaving was also in the human services field. It will be the last time I work in the field, honestly. It's not the people you help. They're fine. It's the management that I often find abysmal but that's another story. LOL. What's your dream job? Thanks for the well wishes. Yes, I am a writer. I want to work as a TV writer. I have two spec pilots ready and you have to live in LA, if you're seriously about breaking in. Right? The new Alabama Shakes album is sooo good. They really found their sound. They'd be perfect for AfroPunk IMO.

Los Angeles! For the past 5 months it's been a toss-up between LA and NYC. Ultimately, LA won b/c of the convergence of music, TV and film. I intend to go there to try my hand at crafting scripted TV and I want to explore music further. That's great! What kind of full time job are you looking for? Are you willing to move? I'm loving the new Alabama Shakes! I wasn't into them before but damn, if they didn't win me over.

Happy New Year!! The Internet/Sza/Jhene Aiko concert crowd was....immature. And I don't mean age. Between dudes smoking weed right in front of security, and girls suffering from bad trips on whatever drug... there were so many studded jackets, hates, shoulders, Sonic the Hedgehog would have lost a shit-ton of rings. But on a brighter note, I met the sister of the producer of the movie Dear White People. We took pictures, chatted it up and everything :D

Sza was dope!! she truly has her own style of performance that is captivating. The audience was mainly there for Jhene and didn't go up for Sza that much, but Sza at one point went into O.T. Genasis' "CoCo" and everyone went wild. The Internet was cool. They mainly did songs from Feel Good, although I was hoping they would do "cocaine" Again, not a lot of people knew who they were and that kind of pissed me off... >.< Any plans for NYE?
