That Zappa live album is rather good. Have you tried 'Make A Jazz Noise Here'? same ill-fated tour/musicians...

funnily enough it was a post from you on one of the cab zappa threads that led me to that album. haven't listened to much live zappa, it's kind of a treasure trove of riches from what I can tell.

Well, there's so much of it. I'd say the '88 ensemble is one of his best along with the Roxy and Elsewhere lineup (i like the rather less refined MOI stuff too of course).

Hiya. Samla are great and more than a bit Zappa-ish. I tend to prefer Maltid and Klossa Knapitatet over their other records, but make sure you hear Familjesprickor (under the name Zamla Mammaz Manna) from the later years 'cos it's one of their best imo. If you like the more humorous side of RIO you might dig Etron Fou Leloublan, maybe give Albert Marcoeur a go as well eh? Fun stuff.

Are we both doing the 'drinking and listening to Ween' thing? The Mollusk is an amazing album, one of the best ever in fact...

MDK is a good place to start, but i actually think the live Magma stuff far surpasses the studio albums. The sound on those 70's albums isn't too hot imo and they really take off live. Live/Hhaï is the one i listen to most often and the more recent live trilogy (30th anniversary shows i think) sounds excellent as well. As for similar bands.... i can't claim to be an expert on Zeuhl but if your ears can take it check out Ruins and KōenjiHyakkei if you haven't already. Tatsuya Yoshida is the lunatic behind these and about 180 different projects and he's an utterly insane composer/bandleader and drummer and his work with Kōenji sounds like Magma on Steroids. Also recommended: Four Visions by Eskaton and Eros by DÜN. Oh, and Weidorje's s/t album (i believe formed by ex members of Magma).

Hi. Finally got round to that Kamasi Washington thing (over two sittings). It didn't blow my head off, but there's some really nice stuff in there for sure. It's possibly not something i'd play a lot of, but thanks for the rec all the same. You still listening to much Jazz? Aside from Miles, Mingus and Tyner i seem to be giving it a rest at present.

Yeah, i've heard it and i like the string quartet stuff. I think the new one is one of their best.

Good that you got to see Kronos. I don't have much of theirs, but like what i've heard. There's not much Reich i've not enjoyed, personally i'd rate him much higher than Glass or Riley. Top of the list for me are The Desert Music and Music For 18 Musicians and i'd also recommend The Four Sections, Sextet, Octet and Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ for a start. I can see how some of this stuff might drive some people up the wall, but i love it. Kavus called it psychedelic because of the effect the interweaving textures have on you once you lock into them and i'm inclined to agree. It took me a while to appreciate, but i find the best of this stuff hypnotic and affecting and anything but background music (unlike a lot of wallpapery ambient music and dripping tap minimalism i've heard). Let me know what you think of it anyway. ps: if you're interested in contemporary composition you could give John Adams a try, his 'Naive and Sentimental Music' is pretty incredible.

Yeah, i've heard it now and it's not bad. I haven't listened to a full album of theirs since Amnesiac and i've never been arsed about catching up tbh. Used to like OK Computer and Kid A back in the day. Noticed you've been spinning some Reich, some of that stuff is pretty mindblowing.

Both Aksak albums are very good, and the second one in particular sounds rather Cow-ified (Frith and Cutler both play on it). I'm listening to the first one now and it's more chamber rocky with Zappa and electronic influences.

For some reason i've not given that first album a proper listen in a long time (or perhaps ever). I love Of Queues and Cures though, along with the Hatfield stuff. Have you heard Aksak Maboul?

Your gif bought me here, but I must say it's good to see a bit of Autechre gracing the old library.

A Kunt reference? I'll be honest, I'm starting to move from the respectful nod position to one of feeling somewhat threatened in my position on here.

using only opinions i have observed on last.fm, i think that the following statement is true: either cardiacs is one's favorite band ever, or one has not heard of cardiacs.

I haven't listened to their whole discography, but I have to their first five albums. All of them are magnificent. I would recommend that you begin from the start: Gentle Giant. Don't let the cover art scare you! Heh.

Thanks, I'll check them out. Actually, I've been meaning to listen to Sing To God for a while now. Now seems a good a time as any.

They certainly sound like nothing I've heard thus far. I have yet to make something sensible out of their music. What's certain is that I do like them, I'm just not sure how much. Some of their songs are way too short, but I tend to get out of touch with longer ones. While I appreciate their progressiveness, it seems to me that they too often have no apparent melody. They intertwine too much sound, making, at least for me, a nearly incoherent noise I'm struggling to wrap my mind around. Almost every song feels incomplete. Maybe I just don't have the ear it takes to appreciate their music, eh? I am still evaluating them, though, so I'll see where that takes me. Bear in mind that I'm not myself these days. Everything feels.. inflated and dull, in the lack of a better description.

Haha yeah I love that one, the episode with the priest is probably my favourite though... Judas/Jesus/Judas/Jesus, I always get them confused! I don't understand why more people don't know about 15 Storeys, it's a genius of a sit-com. Yeah mclusky/FOTL are my favourite ever band(s), Andy Falkous is my hero!

Blue rat? All the energy of a rat, trapped in a can? YES I love 15 Storeys High. I didn't think anyone would ever get that reference. You have great music taste, we are clearly great people. Cream of pork pie soup anyone?

The name sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't know their music. I'm currently mainly exploring 70s progressive rock, symphonic rock and early metal, but I'm jumping to everything, from classical to darkpsy. Generaly, I'm not that much into alternative rock/metal, but I'll give them a hear.
