8) The second one is GeGeGe no Kitaro, the popular manga by Shigeru Mizuki. Got myself the first couple of volumes, from a total of twelve, while in the case of Kamui-den got the first of four titanic, 1500-pages volumes. Both titles are phenomenal, and must-reads for the non-mainstream fans.

7) Talking about manga, have you dropped it for good, or did you still managed to read a thing or two (like AX)? I, for instance, haven't read anything in London, but before I picked up some really interesting stuff. Not sure if I told you, but I ventured in Jiro Taniguchi's Summit of the Gods, which really touched me and excited me in a way, that I want to enroll in the next years in a Mountain climbing club. Definitely recommend it, as it's currently being published in English. Another title that I loved was Rose of Versailles, that made me buy Stefan Zweig's Marie Antoinette (in the original, as I'm lucky enough) which was the main source of inspiration for Riyoko Ikeda. This one is unbelievably nonexistent in English, but I believe that there are scans of it. Lastly before going to London I bought two classics, that are unfortunately (but obviously) unavailable in English. The first one is Kamui-den, the chef-d'oeuvre of the Garo Magazine.

6) Although I lived with two Japanese girls for these last four months, and socialized with many more Asian people, I still can't understand them quite well. What I noticed, and it took me some time to notice it, is that everyone has a social mask on. Although with some it may be a minor one, with most of them it's huge. And, even though I consider myself japanophile in someways, I can't understand most of their actions and behaviors. I think that Western are more healthier in a way, that they don't hide, and just live out life. Perhaps Asians find an exile in Video Games, and even manga, and live their life through there.

5) As I knew people from all over the world, everyone convinced me how beautiful their country was, and I just felt like visiting everywhere. And as you describe me those beautiful landscapes in America, it's a place where I really want to go. If I had the money, I would take this year off and do a voyage around the globe. Hell, I don't even have the money to do a tour around Portugal...

4) Overall I'm really happy on dropping the previous University. And I don't have the feeling I lost 2 years of my life (or 1 and a half). I actually think I learnt a lot, and that it made me who I am today. I don't regret choosing it at the time, I someway am grateful for it, because now I really think I'm in the right way. Although I change from a course who offers so many jobs, to one, where everyone who has it is unemployed. Still, as I in these last months became more Carpe Diem then anything else, I don't fear the future. In the end I believe if a present in a job application a CV with 7 languages, I may get lucky...

3) With Spanish now (I ended up speaking quite fluently Spanish, Don Quijote is my next reading) I could say I speak 5 languages, Portuguese, German, English, French and of course Spanish. Now that I already applied to the University, I'm just waiting for the results, to know in which class I'm going to end up. I applied to Asian studies, in this case I would chose to learn Japanese and Arabe (I wont dare to go to Chinese, because not only it's the hardest language out there, I think it would mess up with the Japanese, as both use the same characters, but with different meaning, and I really fancy learning Japanese). I also applied to European studies, which would be Italian and French (or maybe Romanian, not sure yet), and to Classic studies, Latin and Ancient Greek. I'm really looking forward to know where I'm going to end up, and excited to start with the new languages!

2) Not only is London a fabulous city, but being in a language school, and in their residence, I meet students from all over the globe which was fascinating for me. It was in London that I realized I want to study foreign languages and culture. Also, due to the fact that most of the students were Latin american, I ended up learning Spanish. And although Portuguese and Spanish are very close, there's still a big difference. It was thus a big effort. The again, It's curious how no Spanish-speaker can speak well Portuguese. This happens because Spanish has only 5 vocals, while in Portuguese there's 9 + 5 (these 5 are nasal vocals). So although both languages are so similar, it's still hard to learn one, even if you're fluent in one of them. Nevertheless, for me it was fascinating to learn a new language, and I felt that this is what I wanted to do for the next years.

1) As I re-read your last comment, i'm curious to know how is your french (and latin) doing. Mine is terrible unfortunately. Actually my life went through a big twist, as I dropped university last winter. I'm not sure if I told you, but I was studying Computer Engineering. I remember at the time choosing it for my (fainting) interest on computers, but mainly, because of the wide-range job offers, after finishing the bachelor. But, although for times I thought it was quite interesting and even exciting, overall it was a pain. And it definitely wasn't something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So, after one year and a half, I dropped it. Nevertheless, I want to finish University, and even though I hadn't quite the idea what to do, I knew that University will only start on September, so I decided to go to London to a language school improve my english. This was back in March. I ended up staying there 4 months, and I loved every bit of it.

hey man!! it's been so long that i'm even ashamed of writing you. do you even remember me? It's been almost one year since my last message (How time flies by). But in a stream of thoughts I remembered our long talks here over last.fm, and I decided to ask how you're doing, and how were these last months with you. I'm looking forward hearing from you!

Only the music on my phone scrobbles, and that stuff has gotten a bit stale. A lot of my music lives on my hard drive, and is unknown to last.fm Primarily our overlap is in post rock, and I used to listen to a lot of the Agalloch Ulver type stuff a few years ago, but my tastes changed some. Now i tend to listen to stuff more on the math rock side of things, and a fair amount of electronic stuff as well.

5. ..."This is Miyazaki on LSD! The Music of Marie (Marie no Kanaderu Ongaku) is very imaginative. It's an epic fantasy but with added layer of Furuya's insane art and imagination." I can only agree. Also my first volume of Taniguchi Summit of the gods (in French) has finally arrived, haven't read it yet. Also I finally ordered Tsuge's L'homme sans Talent. Really curious to read it, but I still want to finish other stuff. Lastly, I've got Fantagraphics' beautiful book, A Drunken Dream. First of all, is one of the best looking books ever. Here you have a look on the book (down the page the video). As for the content, I'm halfway through and I'm surprised, on how good shoujo could be. As I said in the ANN Forums " For me it feels way more mature that most of todays shoujo (Almost josei with younger characters)"

But what I heard from it, it's visuals are the stunning part. Anyway, I made got myself quite some interesting manga's lately. Psychedelic manga Ultra Heaven vol 1 & 2, one of the best looking mangas I have read, and the trips are unbelievable. Tokyo Zombie, which is hilarious, and I love hanakuma's art. Also the two first volumes of Taiyo Matsumoto's Samurai Bamboo, which is for me the best example on how good Matsumoto's art can be, also Music of Marie by Furuya, it was my first Furuya manga, and I loved it . In SDCC "Best and Worst Manga" Panel It was elected, as one of the most wanted manga, and Carlos Santos described it as:

3. I'm glad you enjoyed the Tumblr. It's really fun, and I get find out new stuff other users post. Kon's Death shocked me completely. Although I was starting to think that he could have some health problems, because of the status of Dream Machine, I never thought it was something fatal. After hearing about it, I got depressed. I had a Drink in his honor and watched Millennium Actress, still my favorite by him will always be perfect blue. I needed a couple of days to recover, and then I read his last blog entry which I just loved. Also I immediately ordered his manga, Kaikisen. As of today, I already got it and read it. And what a wonderful manga. As I posted in ANN Forum, "I highly recommend for every Kon fan to pick it up (and Otomo fans). Although It's not your typical Kon story, it does contain some Kon's elements, that he would later develop as an director. It's to refer that manga was his original passion, since he read Otomo's Domu in high school."

2. Well it sounds to me that you need a big change over there. Still I think it's also a great country. I visited NYC last year and found it really great, especially the people. Don't know if I could live there for a lifetime, because it's too crowded, but I wouldn't mind to spend there some months. I do believe that fashion conquers all. Some years ago, everyone was wearing a Che Guevara shirt, when they even knew what he did. And this will always happen, because most people find it more important other people's opinion than their own. Remember Andersson's The Emperor's new clothes. Never heard of a soccer mom, and I don't really think such thing exists here. Still over protective mothers exist everywhere. That's a nice thing with the portuguese stickers. Though I didn't find any in NYC, but then again, I didn't find one scooter, so probably a more western phenomenon.

1. Sorry for the (very) late reply, I just started college last week and I'm stressing out with my shit schedule (I starts classes at 10 o'clock and finish at 6.30)... It's really interesting to find out about that american phenomenon. I would never imagine to have a life where I would move so often. That commercial is... amazing? I mean, it's funny, but shows how strong the nationalism is. I do believe though that Washington would cry if he seen that. What for me is so strange, is that there is such an rivalry against the british while the americans all descend from the british. I mean, "true" americans are only the native americans, which got discriminated, or has this been forgotten?

1. So first off, good luck on your Sophomore year, I hope it goes well. Anyway, I would also like to try out and live in a foreign country, but not more than a year, maybe I'll do an Erasmus in a year or two. I would like to do it in Paris, that would be great. Alternatives would be Italy or England. In the end, I would return to Portugal. It's not like it's the best country out there, it has major flaws, still It's my home, and I like it. This is the place where I want to spend the rest of my life. And I believe most of the people think like this. But it's not like in America, where you say people (must) consider it the greatest country. We here have the consciousness that it isn't a great country like most of the West European ones. Still it's a small cozy land which we all like and all are proud of it.

6.Well I had serious problems with the language, so I got myself some Portuguese subs. Seriously, even they have difficulty understanding the wiretaps, how could I understand, since I'm not a native speaker. Still, I really enjoy to hear them. I really envy your scooter, I want to get one for some time, but I never had enough money to buy one. Anyhow, it's really nice that it has a Portugal sticker on it, must be one of the few scooters like that in the states. We are not patriotic, as in the US where you see American Flags, everywhere (or is it just in the movies?). Still we always enjoy seeing a reference to our small country in foreign countries. By the way, did you knew that Stars and STripes Forever was composed by a Portuguese?

5. Although I found Moebius drawings mindblowing, it was that absurdity that I enjoyed more. I "Escale sur Pharagonescia", I just loved the part where the Human starts to disintegrate and turn into "tapes", because he didn't "striked" before he drank the extraterrestrial drink. I never read anything like that, and that is what impressed me most in Moebius. Concerning The Wire, I know exactly what you mean. The other day I was watching a crime film, and as I was watching it, I was thinking stuff like, "hey he doesn't have a warrant to do that" or "Can't the defendant sue the police for doing that". Anyhow, I see now how unrealistic hollywood portraits the whole system.

4. Not sure if that's the title in english, the original is "L'Homme est-il bon?". Another Reference to Moebius? I do believe so. Overall, I loved "memories", Still I would like to see more parody manga by Katsuhiro Otomo. Nikopol Trilogy, looks rather easy to get in French, still I have so many things to get, including Sandman, which will be quite expensive, that I don't know when I'll get to buy it. It looks like you have quite a nice collection of comics by Bilal. Siince in the original release I have of Bilal, it's colored, and there is no reference to another artist besides Bilal, I do think the originals are colored. Still you never know. For example I found in the library the other day a brazilian edition of Akira (divided into 20+ Volumes), totally colored. And there was no reference who colored it, or that the original was black and white.

3. And with this kind of fortune, I could visit a place I like (not all places), if I have a strong desire. Now that is in my opinion, the strongest factor. I happy you liked it, and Tezuka has a lot of experimental shorts, although most of them aren't as good as "Memory", still most of them are up on youtube. Well I just ordered AX, it was pretty hard, since it went out of stock in amazon.co.uk, amazon.fr and amazon.de. I guess the sales are good which is a wonderful thing. So I had to order from amazon.com, but since it's far away, I have to wait two months to get it. Still the important thing is that it'll come. I'll try to get my hands on Arzach than, the original version. I must say, it's the most appealing cover. This and and Le Chasseur Deprime (the depressed hunter). Also I just took a quick look in memories and I noticed as "Electric Bird Land" ends the same way as Moebius "Is the man good"

2. For example, the portuguese word for action is "acção" but in brazil they write it "ação", so now in portugal you must write "ação", which for a portuguese looks terrible. Most people here are against it, but rumors are that microsoft has "asked" the government to do this "agreement", because they consider it a waste to have language packs in brazilian and in portuguese. Anyhow, I believe that with our short amount of time (and a limit of information, as you saw in "Memory") we can't visit everything, no matter how much money we have. Hell, I could even try to visit the "real Portugal" and go to the small villages, but even in such a small country, a lifetime is not enough. Don't get me wrong, money is an important factor, but not the most. Also, I don't know about you, but I'm not rich, as an (West-)European citizen, I'm just one average middleclass folk. But still as being a citizen of the world, I'm very rich, if you know what I mean.

1. I find it great that you're learning French, and to learn 5 "school years" in less than 6 months, that is really a commitment! And really like your idea of going to work in a farm in France. When that happens, I'll visit you! Anyhow, what exactly is Sophomore? I never heard of it. AT your question between the difference of Brazilian and Portuguese, it's a bit hard to explain, but in some way is comparable with English and American. The pronunciation is different, and although the grammatic is the same, they always use a conjugation, which we rarely use. There are also some words that are written differently, but this is going to change with a new "spelling agreement" (don't know if this exists in English, it's when the government is going to official change a part of the language). Now they want to change the words that have a different writing in Brazilian, to the brazilian version.

Hey dude, read your sidebar, and empathise with most of what you have to say. Tottaly agree with your addiction to music, but ive embraced it, but can see how it could become nagative easily. And yes, almost all band lyrics DO fucking suck, and I really dont see why anyone does give a shit about them. But theres the odd band that can write well. But youknow, if your into poetry you become a writer I guess.

6. The one I read was Escale sur Pharagonescia. I was shocked on how good it is, and I really want to get some of it's stuff, hopefully in French. I was planning on getting Le Garage hermétique, but since it looks like it's OOP, I guess I should try something else. As you have the moebius collection, I would like to ask what are your personal favorites. Speaking of French Comics, I just found in my room, while I was cleaning it up, an original 1986 edition of Bilal's La Femme Piege. I don't know if you're familiar with it, it's the second Volume of the Nikopol trilogy. I guess it must be quite a valuable piece, since there where only 1250 printed. I guess I should get the rest of the trilogy.

5. Actually I haven't got any opportunity to get my hands on AX, since it ran out of stock on the day it was released in bookdepository. So I'll buy it from amazon, and since I'm buying something from them I'll also get myself L'Homme sans talent by Tsuge, still as both are quite expensive I have to wait for next month, since I'm penniless at the moment. Still some books I ordered have arrived like Ultra Heaven by Keiichi Koike and Memories by Otomo, I believe you own the latter one. Well I've been reading it, have yet to read the amazing world and Fireball. But what I read for now I found amazing, being my favorite the Tako Chronicle, where I just couldn't stop laughing. Still as I read the first story Flower, I noticed how Otomo refers Moebius as an influence, and since the library had some of Moebius comics (all in Portuguese), I decided to try one.

4. As I read your (3rd) post I don't know why, but I had the urge to tell you to watch Tezuka's short movie Memory. I don't know if it really has anything to do with what you said, but maybe you could understand why I recommended it after you see it. Anyhow, I believe it's in the your nature to overhype things, I think that in this way we feel ourselves more important, for example to say that Spain made history is someway to say, I watched history being made. People feel important this way.
