haha yeah, amazing little album.. with this, it's marked itself as one of those particularly special bands/projects with no less than 3 albums of prime gem-like value to black metal, as far as i am concerned.. i see you haven't scrobbled it, but i should presume you've heard it somewhere nonetheless, given your comment above ?

i am hoping the upcoming new mgla wouldn't focus or depend so much on darkside's drumming as it did in the age of excuse.. cymbal virtuoso and all that is great and all, but one thing that made AoE a bit weak for me was a seemingly major focus on his drumming and songwriting often appearing to have been written around it as opposed to something like in EiF where things were more balanced.. i am infact hoping mgla would change their style/sound a bit in the new one, more relentless and dreadful in sound and instrumentation, more devastatingly hopeless and bleak and foreboding in feel, whilst not sounding entirely like a different/new band.. would rather also have a new kriegsmaschine, but i guess that's dead.

Why hello there fellow metalhead. Last Gaerea was a blast, right? One of my favorite live shows in 2022! I see your charts are very grim and clean, but I'd know of a way to ruin them with all your Youtube scrobbles, which is the following extension - I'm using it and it works like a charm when I'm checking out new vids by Taylor Swift or Drake and stuff: https://web-scrobbler.com/ - Regards,

yeah the last gaerea was really solid, can easily imagine their live show being super tight...nah thanks, i'd rather my charts remain as they are haha.. i don't listen to shit on youtube that much or that frequently either.. i believe i'd used that same web scrobbler for a short while sometime in the past when i'd scrobbled some penderecki, chopin, wychnegradsky etc probably last year or so.. most of the instrumental stuff (classical/neoclassical/electronics) that i listen to in youtube once in a while are typically those 1-2 hour long compilations made by various channels anyway.

hey man, nope I am not a karan, you have me confused with someone else.. we may very well have exchanged shouts back in the day though i'll have to go to my shoutbox's early pages to recall what we conversed about.. we may very well have conversed in orkut back then also since i was a member of some indian metal group or two, but this profile picture (or even a similar one) couldn't have been the one of mine in orkut, cuz this pic is about 2-3 years old only and i can assure you there were never any cats in any profile pics of mine in orkut back then cuz i got into petting (or trying to pet) random cats anytime i see one only about 3 years ago haha.

hmm, have been into that type of sound for quite sometime though, perhaps you're thinking of some comment i might have made more than 2 yrs ago when indeed i wasn't so much into this type of shit (by which i mean you refer to powerviolence/mathcore/disso BM).. wasn't into PG until relatively recently (a few months ago) - used to be indifferent to them until then..still not a lot into powerviolence/mathcore stuff in general though, PG just stands out for me due to their disso BM mainly.

yeah am not into noisy or punky sounding shit in general, but hardcore/powerviolence is alright now and then, if thats what you are referring to as the punk elements here in PG..the more "fun", non-dark types of punk that i think is perhaps the more prevalent type in practice, is not the kind of punk i can accept in any way in my black metal...anyway, for me PG is basically avant-garde dissonant BM with hardcore elements.. likewise, there have been once or twice some examples of crusty BM or shit like that that i've liked well enough (cant recall specific names atm) but not in general, although specialists may argue those elements are there in less obvious manner in many an album that i like...am much less open to black noise, noise in general tbh, but am sure there's been mild exceptions to it here and there too... you sound like you have some noise, crust, punk, etc BM recs for me on hold:P

I definitely don't mean pop-punk or folk-punk when talking about punky metal lol. Not even thrash I guess. If anything, crust and power-violence are not fun sounding in general but vocals can vary I suppose. style I had someone claim that early Amebix is proto-black metal and honestly, they're probably on to something. But anyway, only crusty BM I can think of is Dödsrit and Ancst. Maybe Fall of Efrafa for blacky Crust. There's others but they may be too much fun for you to handle. As for black noise, Decoherence but it's also got dissonance. They don't call themselves black metal but you may still like Qrixkuor, Omegavortex, Egregore I guess. Don't really know wtf they are but Jute gyte and Pyrithe may be worth listening to although they may be a little too experimental. There's some newer releases on I, Voidhanger that may be up your alley in terms of sounding dissonant but I haven't given them a proper listen yet.

ah forgot to reply you back, well better 4 months late than never:P yes in the 80s many things including crust/punk were influential on the emerging DM and first wave BM movements, so am not surprised early amebix, discharge etc are considered some kinda proto-black metal.. i am well familiar with decoherence and even like them a little bit, but isn't calling them black noise a stretch ? i thought they were just noisy disso BM for the most part haha.. also remember hearing and moderately liking omegavortex and qrixkuor but not the type that i could get into at the time, probably still not.. jute gyte is indeed far too funky and experimental for me, will check out pyrithe at some point tho.. and no thanks, i am not into the type of bands usually working with i, voidhanger and i say this after many an attempt to get into some or the other bands there who often get some hype due to the experimental adventures of most bands there.. but nah, not my sound for a variety of reasons..

yes mine's the RR 310 in red, looks pretty hot indeed, haha...250-400 segment, which is considered the beginner class in europe for instance is the intermediate segment in countries like india and are already far more than enough most of the times in most places.. i also have a yamaha 150 (beginner class here) which was my 1st bike and it's kept at my parents' home where i am right now atm still having fun riding it around in the countryside here.. the RR 310 shares its engine and frame (with appropriate tunings and changes according to sportbike, naked or adv) with the BMW G310 R and GS, latter being an ADV sort and baby sibling to the iconic 1200GS.. i am not tall either but this G310 GS is still fine for people my size unlike most other advs... does BMW sell the G310 series there ? as for BMW 600s/650s, at least for india, TVS and BMW are working on parallel twin 500/650s, will take some years ofc but they'll probably also make their way to europe.

I never said a bmw is reliable :D but it does come with better stock parts such as Brembo brakes, quality suspension, LED lights and so on, all parts that you would eventually need to change on a japanese bike. The japanese one is still miles ahead in terms of reliability and cheaper to maintain but needs more work done to be "ready", know what I mean? I sound like stereotypical person first world propblems I guess, haha. Cant help it.

among recent ones that i have got into or getting into since last we talked, you should check out 2021 albums from mare cognitum, fyrnask, DSKNT, manbryne, balmog (has some post punk in its BM).. acathexis s/t album also which is from 2018 but i got into it only recently.. and again reminding you of beltez's album from last yr... fyrnask's and balmog's 2021 albums i've myself yet to listen to more and get into more, but i know i already like them enough to recommend.. DSKNT is significantly dissonant btw so not sure if aside from DsO you ever get much into all that dissonance but if/when in that strongly dissonant mood, check out also ad nauseam's new album, nihilism's new album, gardenjia's 2020 album and again reminding you of ignis haereticum and cainan dawn haha.

mare is a given, ill check out the others. used to listen to plenty of dissoblack but i'm more and more discovering death metal. I dont know if you have listened to dissonant death a lot before; Gorguts; Ulcerate; Immolation, if not check them out. Ad Nauseam was a tad too artsy for my taste, have you listened to Seputus from this years releases? Ill check out Fyrnask, Balmog and DSKNT and report back! :)

i've tried getting into disso death many times but other than immolation (who i used to listen to a lot back in the day as you can see from their position in my all-time charts and even though i've drifted from DM a lot the last 2 or so yrs they are i suppose still one of my fav DM bands), apparently i cant seem to be able to like anything else much, usually not even enough to be able to finish an album for once.. this includes gorguts, ulcerate, portal etc..sound-wise roughly speaking it's often (though not always) something about the specific guitar tuning of DM combined with the dissonance and the drums (usually the snare) in disso-death that doesnt work out for me, i dont quite know what exactly..yeah i know what you mean by ad nauseam being a tad too artsy, i kinda like it (it's practically disso BM to my ears for the most part) but not able to really get into it so far.."tad too artsy" is often my issue with most experimental or avantgarde bands in general.. will check seputus.

checked out the last song from fides inversa's latest album, doesnt remind me very specifically of anyone.. there's a lot of bm with this kinda riffing..but it does remind of something specific that i've listened to before but i too cant recall exactly who/what.. if i do, will let you know..there's not *no* restrictions on movements here (specifics can vary from one state/province to another), but it's right now quite minimal (but not zero) given that the country is mostly between waves.. when a wave starts accelerating, various restrictions on movements come back..thank fuck there's no such thing as submission of gps info and all that overtly technological shit here..

well i have seen finns writing "ja", perhaps they borrowed it in their casual lingo from the germanic lingos.. now that you point it out, and knowing the sound of finnish myself, it does seem like ja doesnt belong to the finnish language... you are talking about linguistics because your mind is blanked out and you have to submit your thesis which has nothing to do with linguistics... and no, i want some cash, in whichever currency but real currency.. yuan works.

death metal bandpic on a graveyard, cuz this is an older practice compared to BM bands with hoods or masks which started relatively recently since mgla became a bit popular about 8-10 yrs ago and it is still not as much a trend as the former...both are generally tasteful and appealing and suit the respective artforms (mostly), but that BM corpse paint bullshit is the stupidest thing i've ever known and it is not just stupid now (actually it is super dumb at this point) but it was already stupid to begin with back in the early 1990s.

If they would have just made the already existing functionality better, added better customization features and brought in things like scrobble editing, the ability to change your username and etc back in like 2013-2014 and given people a reason to actually pay for "premium", they'd probably have a lot more premium users now and be making way more money. Anyways, I'm still hoping Sonemic(the RYM beta project) eventually has a scrobbling feature, at which point I would probably stop using last.fm completely if I could transfer all of my chart data to the new site. I'm not going to get my hopes up about that though, it seems the beta is progressing very slowly.

yeah, last fm did get around by i think 2018 or something to slightly improve the shitshow it was after 2015, with these username changing facilities for paying users and going back to retaining country tags in bandnames in most cases etc..you're right that if they'd kept these things back in 2015 itself many users probably wouldnt have left after that.
Actions
-
-
Gravemouth
I think the redesign in general, but especially getting rid of groups and never bringing them back and showing no regard for people's concern over it, removing the ability to customize profiles etc proves that the people that own the site don't give a shit about it's users or the actual functionality. They completely ruined it, but the people that weren't as deep into the customization/social aspects seemed to stay on the site, so I'm sure the owners view that as an overall "win" - since most of the people into metal and less "mainstream" types of music seemed to be the main source of trolling, creating separate pages for bands with country tags next to them and all the other shit that didn't fit in with how they wanted the site to be used. I'm honestly surprised it still exists, or hasn't been sold off to another company and gone through another terrible redesign.

yeah they either didnt give a shit, or i think more likely that they couldnt give a shit because the site was making no money and they 'had' to cut many aspects from the website to save their money on the servers etc..i dont really know how last fm fares these days, or even back in the day, amongst the "mainstream" people..
Actions

Yeah, maybe other people are getting some sort of nostalgia for it like I am now, maybe covid boredom, maybe both. I always missed having the charts and when i stopped scrobbling it made me realize how much last.fm helped me keep music organized in my own brain when checking out new shit and remembering what I had listened to. But, fuck man, the groups and the social interaction were also maybe 50% of the reason for coming here and the new layout is so hideous that I just couldn't keep doing it. Coming to last.fm after the re design and it suddenly feeling like a hollow empty shell of what it used to be was rather depressing after putting so many years into the charts and developing friendships with random people all over the world.

yeah the stats is awesome, thank the gods they didnt remove this core aspect of the site haha...should have kept the groups though really, or if it was becoming too heavy on their servers, should have found an alternative (maybe they did consider some that didnt get the approval from the bosses with the money) to totally removing them or something..the social interaction aspect was hugely central to last fm, thankfully some of it is returning back the last 1-2 yrs as for example you can see from my own shoutbox activity over the last 18 months or so and a bunch more in the private messages..

That's true. The real benefit of this whole Covid mess was that working from home gave the opportunity to dedicate more time music. Chaotian are a bit weird. On some listens I will absolutely love them, on others not so much. Yeah, I have listened to Void Rot and Venomous Skeleton previously. Void Rot was good. Venomous Skeleton - they're alright, but did not quite fill the void that Sonne Adam had left. It can be a bit weird when it comes to recommending stuff to people, sometimes the recommendations will be spot on, sometimes not. Regarde Les Hommes Tomber was another that I quite liked from your recent charts.

yeah void rot was good but that's about it - they really need to input some of their individuality/originality and dynamics in their writing..it's pretty much full-on krypts worship (plus some funebrarum etc) that i've heard too much all over the place..i had more expectations from them from their demo, or maybe i've heard way too much deathdoom of various types in my life to significantly enjoy another typical deathdoom, which being a relatively simple and un-complex genre is pretty easy to saturate..nothing wrong with it but i'd need to be in that very specific and exclusively anything-goes death/doom mood to complete the full album given the lack of individuality, which doesn't happen so much anymore..i get what you're saying about venomous skeleton but i ended up liking it quite more than sonne adam actually haha..i liked the slightly blackened sound compared to the more doomy sonne adam, and also the overall necromantic or something vibe worked out.

regarde les hommes tomber's 2020 album is in my top 3 of the year..i am expecting that kevel to be at least somewhat similar to it given the MA's labelling of it as sludge/post metal, and RLHT is kinda sludgy post-ish BM..though, post- is such a big class in itself that i wouldn't be surprised if it sounds totally different from RLHT.

Yeah, I completely agree on Void Rot. It was good, but not very memorable. I will give Venomous Skeleton another try at some point, even though it feels like I've already done that before with them. Might just be not my sort of thing, but will still try them again, out of sheer love for Sonne Adam, haha. I don't mind if bands don't try to re-invent the wheel when it comes to certain sub-genres, since they're hard to nail down, i.e. the first three Incantation albums, many bands try to do that but are always missing something, I guess you say they're trying put their own twist to it, but still don't quite get there. But anyway. Just out of curiosity, what are your top 5 albums from last year?

I guess it just depends on what the artists themselves want to play, as long as they're passionate it will reflect in the music. In some I do agree that a "insertbandname"-worship is a starting point for a new musician, maybe even a side project. But as a listener, if you do have a particular sound that you just love, then more of the same can be great. Pretty solid list, Aversio Humanitatis, Panzerfaust, Selbst, Beltez, Konigreichssaal and Novea Militia were brilliant. I do remember liking Regarde les Hommes Tomber. The others were alright since most of them fell in the "generic modern black metal" category for me, which going back to my earlier point if you love the sound, then that's great, but I wouldn't call any of those bad albums and will definitely give them another go, and some others I haven't given a proper listen yet.

glad to know you liked some of those in the list..among the others, audn and gaerea are worth putting a few more listens to..gaerea's sound is similar to regarde les hommes tomber but more post-ish and less sludgy, and also not so far from beltez's album in that way..vibe-wise too they are not entirely in different zipcodes...audn's album is some wonderful atmo bm with some post-rock-ish vibes which isn't too atmo-ish if you know what i mean...loaded with really epic, melancholic, "icelandic" vibing spaced out riffs..this one took me a few listens to get into, at first i didnt like it so much and now i am of opposite opinion about it..i think by this point it's in my top 5 of 2020 if not top 3, haha..sunken and aodon are also better than what they appear on first 1-2 listens, again some epic post-ish atmospheric vibes and riffs in both of them..grimah and terminarch are both very good mgla-ish/worship sorts so unless you're into mgla a lot you may not like them so much in general.

haha i dont think ulcerate is that mainstream to feel filthy about it being your AOTY..my 2019 AOTY was misthyrming's album and they are a very well known band in the BM circles and hence mainstream enough to an extent, haha...good shit is good shit...i couldn't get into it anyways, it was good sure but even on multiple attempts it didn't hook me up..it is very close to dissonant bm too but still didnt work out, dissonant DM in general has never worked out for me at all despite dissonant BM of some or the other kind forming a significant bulk of my taste..i probably should revisit it one of these days.

also you might want to listen to the vital spirit ep. it's nothing crazy new, but it's good stuff by dudes who play in wormwitch, released on vendetta records who also have sunken, afsky and sun worship signed. quite enjoyable. lastly, the infernal sea might be in your ballpark too. pretty solid 2020 record.

that's no easy task. for one, sunken has proven absurdly strong and livslede is certainly among the best albums in the genre that i know of. it's super well done and manages to dance on the lines between atmospheric black metal and dsbm in a way that few others i know do. i've clicked through some of my favourite artists in the genre and checked if last.fm claims you've scrobbled them before. i don't know if you have though. I'll just give you some names to play with. The first and most obvious is Woods of Desolation. arguably one of the most influental bands in the atmo/dsbm borderlands. i do however have my doubts that you don't know them. fyrnask might also be worth looking into for you. same goes for altar of plagues, skagos and falls of rauros. a little more on the "cascadian" end of things. but realistically speaking, the stuff i would recommend along the lines of vukari and the great old ones, you seem to know these. actually, this turns out to be super tough.

yeee they released their new album last friday. it's really really good and it's 11 songs, 35 minutes, and i haven't really been listening to a whole lot of other things so they kinda stack up quickly. especially because their older material is even more "dense" - their first three albums are 12-13 songs in 18-29 minutes. it's always a bit frustrating because it skews the all-time charts. wolves in the throne romm's i will lay down my bones among the rocks and roots has more than 550 plays on my profile, which equals to what's almost 5000 plays worth of touché amoré if you just take the base listening time. my profile will never really correctly display my music taste, at least not in the all time charts. although i have to add, touché amoré is the band i would name if i had to name exactly one band as my favourite band. but the time problem is similar with rap artists, skramz in general, grindcore etc etc bla bla bla

oh yes something else if you like stuff along the lines of murg, waeteras and shit, so basically "classical oldschool black metal with better production" you should definitely listen to specral wound that shit might be exactly in your ballpark. i impulse ordered the record from vendetta along with the new sunken and shit that's some tight, ice cold, blisteringly fast black metal.

yeah it definitely would be a good name for an osdm band no questions asked. hesitation wound is a side project of touché amoré vocalist jeremy, and mortal wound is a osdm band that i never really got into. then theres spectral lore, a "celestial" or ambient black metal project in the style of stuff like mesrathim or mare cognitum, but that's about all i can come up with right now

hey man, it's pretty good, and unexpectedly so since their debut album was (for me) super bland and this new one is the very opposite of bland haha..there's a variety of influences noticeable, such as spacey post-rock riffs, sludgyness (reminding me of regarde les hommes tomber in this regard), some mgla-ish riffs in some songs, etc with good songwriting to keep things interesting and memorable, though i myself have only heard it 5-6 times so far but it will be in my top 10 or maybe even top 5 of 2020 BM...for sure check it out.
