Last.fm and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. It has greatly increased the music taste of those of us who live in “constant” listening, but they have destabilized our listening habits, have made scrobbling unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to scrobbles, have led to widespread scrobbling syndrome, and have inflicted severe damage on the music industry. The continued development of scrobbling will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human being to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the listening habits, it will probably lead to greater scrobble disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased suffering even in “advanced” scrobblers. The scrobbling system may survive or it may break down. If it survives, it may eventually achieve a low level of suffering, but only after passing through a long and painful period of adjustment at the cost of reducing human beings and other living organisms to mere scrobbles.

i read your article and it was a nice reading but honestly it just sounded like you lost control of a hobby that came from trying to manipulate the apperance of your last.fm, which is supposed to be a natural thing instead, as if you were putting too much thought into it... i can kinda understand why it troubled you now cuz 17k for a single artist is a lot indeed lol

Hi Jonathan, I saw your article; interesting take! I have noticed that my music tastes have been skewed by data also, but not in the same way. I study vocals, and so the types of songs and artists that I am learning has skewed my data. This in turn forces me to listen to "other stuff" to balance out the play counts. Bizarre! However, after getting onto spotify - and not relying completely on my own collection - my horizons have opened enormously. I did DJing for a few years, and so my music taste is pretty wide, but there's a whole OTHER world on Spotify. I just need the hours to listen to it all!

Yep, last fm stats, I'm probably going to spend the rest of my life trying to bury artists in my overall charts that I used to like 15 years ago.

Came here from your article (a really good one btw). I do too understand that addiction. I also have the same feeling of being obsessed with the charts and being self conscious while listening to music hahah

I just read your article and I know the feeling + I am a chart freak ... i've been here for about 16 years and I gave up on the obsession on listenning to new and trendy music just a few years ago... now over 15 years and almost half million streamings I do listen what I love and I don't care if its old or if theres no new music on my weekly chart...
