Some ideas for tough guy hardcore: Cro-Mags - Age of Quarrel, Judge - What It Meant, Breakdown - The '87 Demo, Youth of Today - Break Down the Walls, Slapshot - Olde Tyme Hardcore , Project X - Straight Edge Revenge, The Abused - Loud and Clear, Antidote - Thou Shalt Not Kill, Uniform Choice - Screaming for Change. And if you consider early Boston Crew stuff to be tough guy hardcore, then DYS - Brotherhood, SS Decontrol - Get It Away, and Negative FX - Negative FX, which all three are among the best hardcore punk releases ever made imo.

holy shit I saw that movie as a wee lad but could never remember the name lol. My school caters to a decent number of those types though since it's a city University and not really a prestigious school, yet not quite a community college either. Pretty much mid tier private school level education for less advantaged peoples. and also it sucks not really having the time to learn or even play leisurely. I'd love to learn every instrument but am too much of a busy college student to do that. Being like 11-14 or younger really is the best ttime to learn music and languages tnh

I think I've been stuck in at 997 for some time now because I haven't gotten any new music, at least nothing from artists I've never tried. Nothing has really piqued my interest, I guess. I will check out YOB though because an old friend recommended it to me, but I still haven't picked the other 2. Would you happen to have any suggestions? Maybe something I can buy a couple of tracks of on bandcamp?

Makes my heart happy as an educator to see people going back to school tbh. Speaking of music, I'd love to formally study music again, the most music that I know about is the most basic music theory from playing sax 10 years ago which i wanna pick back up again when im older and have money. you used to play guitar right? idr because it's been so damn long

I was just kidding, I didn't mean it for real - when I feel like the heavens have stopped listening, I usually lose myself in a different world inside my head for a while to recharge. Can't say if it'll get me or anyone to the moon and back, but it's the reason I'm still kicking. It's a little bit like that mirror in Harry Potter, but you gotta come out every once in a while too - because a dream you can't wake up from will just turn into sadness after a while. It's the way of all things. Entropy, some might say - futility, I would suggest.

That's awesome haha! You must have been booking it! I see it's your top Napalm Death album as well - it's certainly my favourite by them, and actually it was my favourite album in general for much of high school and university. Probably my favourite song off it is Mentally Murdered - doing those triplets on the bass drum with a single pedal during the mosh part of it is actually harder than Mick Harris makes it look lol. Those low growls were about as low as it got back in 1988, spare maybe Bill Steer on Reek of Putrefaction - talk about a career though 'cause he plays guitar on both albums.

I only really know what my sister said since I haven't watched it myself but I can ask her if you have a question. By the way, you mentioned watching Little Witch Academia. I'm a huge fan if the original OVAs and it's actually a huge regret of mine that I'll like never before able to afford the TV series version. That one I'll definitely be streaming for sure!

I haven't watched it myself, but I just found out my sister is still in the process of finishing it. In the meanwhile, she says it's been really entertaining to see all the trouble the main character finds herself in, because some of it is really unfortunate but you can't quite feel bad for Tanya considering she's definitely not a good person - so it just because amusing seeing it all unravel, given that you still end up being invested in the story.

My older sister watches several new anime shows every season with her boyfriend (I think the latest thing they watched was Saga of Tanya the Evil, but I'm having a hard time remembering what else). Out of non-anime stuff, she's also been watching and loving The Expanse. For my younger sister, I tend to only found out she watched something way long after she finishes it, but if I recall correctly, she's really been into Brooklyn Nine-Nine. By the way, I've been curious about Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid because it looks friggin' hilarious! Do you think I might like it? It stood out to me from the moment it was announced because the plot is so out there for a comedy.

Nah man, I don't really tend to keep up with the latest shows - the most recent show I've watched is Planetarian from last year which I picked up because I was already a huge fan of the Planetarian series so I already knew I was gonna love it. And sure enough, I'm about to start rewatching it for the 6th time 'cause it's so good. I admit I am waaaay behind the times - I don't really stream anything on Netflix, Crunchyroll or elsewhere, and I waited till I could buy the Japanese blu-ray about a month and a half ago to watch Planetarian, only using the internet to download the subtitles. I don't really recommend this way of life, but since I tend to just invest in shows that will hopefully mean something to me in the long term, it suits me just right. Like I rarely watch something for just the sake of entertainment which I realize is pretty fuckin' insane. I still read the latest news on animenewsnetwork every day so I have a general idea about what's airing and what's popular.

I think RYM has been extremely useful at various times in the past for me for sure. I don't go to many shows myself, but a lot of bands definitely show up to Toronto, even Assuck played there when they were together back in the 90s. Surprisingly Carcass played a local show just next door in Kitchener. Also, so awesome to hear you liked Wormrot! I feel extremely glad that you liked one of my recommendations :D Also, that's sick you met John Longstreth! WICKED drummer, that guy. My only cred in meeting musicians is having met Barney Greenway from Napalm Death whom I felt super lucky I got a chance to talk to. He even signed my concert ticket!

You're welcome! Back in the olden days, I used to frequent a lot of punk and metal blogs where people would tell stories and recommend albums related to ones I already knew. Over the years, I've kept track of the artists, labels, and band members of the albums I discovered back then and as time goes on, I come across new connections that spring up that are related to them in some form or another. A lot of those blogs no longer exist, but here's an example of one that's still alive and kickin' (I've linked to the post through which I found the blog 7 years ago): http://bloggedquartered.blogspot.ca/2010/01/infest-1987-2002-2xcd-remastered.html Another thing that has helped me fill out the gaps has been RateYourMusic, which is actually my main music profile on the internet. Here's a link: https://rateyourmusic.com/~kharacter

Yes, a couple more artists and I'll be joining you in the +1000 club! In terms of recommendations, I can't seem to get enough of Wormrot's newest album 'Voices' so I highly recommend it - it's modern grindcore at its finest! It's even got Evangelion references randomly! For hardcore, Vivisick's 'Respect and Hate' is extremely fun and tight Japanese hardcore with a lot of influences - it's got classic fastcore stuff but also some pretty sick choruses! The singer sounds like no one else as well! Speaking of unique singer's, Gauze's latest LP 'Binbou Yusuri No Rizumu Ni Notte' is also one of my favourites which I've been getting into again majorly recently - they're a super unique take on hardcore, and they've actually been together since the early 80s. I don't know as much about street punk but people tend to go bananas for Cock Sparrer's 'Shock Troops'

That seems like quite a strict childhood though! The fact that you didn't just surrender to your parents' way of looking at the world shows how much strength you have as well! Not everyone is built to succeed with traditional work and school ventures right from the get-go. I see it my younger sister for example - she's a super talented and bright person but school simply does not agree with her. I'm confident she'll find a way to work it out just like you! I actually still collect cds to this day - there was just some 50 or so cds that I sold to a used record store because they were purchased when I still hadn't found my taste in music - they included stuff like most of the Led Zeppelin discography and AC/DC, The Who and stuff that was still good but I was willing to get rid of because I didn't listen to it any more and I was in a real pinch money-wise. Right now I still have 200+ cds and a few stuff on vinyl that's never been pressed on digital.

By the way, I've been wondering this - how did you get into music-listening as a kid? Like collecting music and and listening to albums and stuff. I always tend to ask people what the first album was that they ever bought. I just remembered because I got into music 'cause of my dad - that was another influence he had on me and such. He was and has always been a huge Queen fan and I picked up on it a lot as a kid. That was the beginning for me I'd say. By the way, I'm not expecting some legendary first record purchase or nuthin', I'm just wondering. Like, my band's guitarist was a Sesame Street compilation album - mine was Master of Puppets by Metallica which I felt proud of at the time but honestly ended up being a really roundabout way of getting to the music I currently like. I tried to sell it to a used CD store once along with others CDs but they gave me back that one 'cause it was so old and scratched up. Now it just sits on my shelf next to Minor Threat and Maruta.

Of course it was dubbed in Spanish as he watched it on cable TV back then. Damn though - sometimes I wish I hadn't gotten so mentally ill way back when. I could be doing great deeds in the pursuit of science and here I am working in customer service while I'm lining up defenses against suicidal thoughts. I know it seems pretty pathetic to ask what could have been, but experience tells me it's better than succumbing to the notion that I doomed from the start.

I remember knowing this other Latino family and the son was into the anime they aired on TV, but he wasn't allowed to watch Inuyasha for example, because it had "demons". My aunt once tried to convince us that Halloween was evil and we freaked out, and so my dad pulled the plug on the church's influence in our upbringing. I have to thank the heavens high (lol) that my dad watched this scene from Carl Sagan's Cosmos right around the time he was questioning his faith back in the 80s when he was growing up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvnDaYnXwas
