Disclosure is one of my favourites too, definitely up there with HTMAP, especially around this time of the year. While I enjoy Mandylion, it's also one my least played and liked albums from Anneke's era. Sounds a little doom metal with Dead Can Dance influences (proto symphonic metal?)— with a lot of "space" that might come across as either atmospheric or monotonous... or both.

Well said about being atmospheric or monotonous. I believe they still were in search of their own unique sound at that moment

That doesn't sound good :( I hope the hospital staff treat you kindly and provide the care you need - and, also, that your stay is short! I love all birds a lot! I volunteer with rescue parrots every once in a while so I can have an excuse to hang out with some lol... Ducks are especially sweet though; something about them invokes happiness. I'm always excited to see them "in the wild" -- even if they are usually just mallards where I live (my local favourites are the less common wood ducks/pato joyuyo; they're beautiful).

Hey, thank you. I'm better, yeah. It was though but I'm happy I am here. Volunteering with birds sounds a great plan, I would love to, but sadly live in a big metropolis. I agree with you, ducks are specially sweet birds. There is one particular duck in the park I go to that loves hanging out with humans and eat from them although I am worried about him because people often feed him bullshit he is not supposed to eat. Every time I go I have to make sure this duck is alive. I love him. Known him for years but I am always afraid for him. I can't tell all the people in the park to not feed him this or that. I am not her owner and there are always irresponsible parents with his kids I just can't boss around. So I just like to make sure he's ok. That wood duck is a beautiful thing.

Oh, I'm not the best at individual song recs, but I'll give it a shot... With Norway, while you could absolutely go down a dream pop/shoegaze path with acts like Slowdive (When the Sun Hits, Star Roving), School of Seven Bells (Half Asleep), Mazzy Star, or Cocteau Twins - you could also try some of the indie pop, baroque pop, and neo-psychedelia artists, like Weyes Blood (Twin Flame, Andromeda, Movies), Lana Del Rey, or even Grizzly Bear (Two Weeks). Beach House's Teen Dream is an excellent Dream Pop album as a whole, but it's also has this distinctive 2010-11 "indie" sound.

I tried listening to some of 7 last night. I really can’t. I like Lose Your Smile but that’s it. I’m curious what you like about it tbh. I will die on this hill. It’s so downbeat and monotonous imo. I appreciate you offering me a chance to elaborate on it btw! It’s quite a fan base Beach House has. :)

It's all good! :) I got into Beach House around Teen Dream too and have had a lot of shifting feelings towards them over the years (used to dislike Bloom; Legrand's vocals). I'm a little surprised how they've ballooned in popularity in recent years — which is not the case for many of their "indie" peers. As for 7, I think I may enjoy it for all the reasons you don't! The repetition paired with the trippy neo-psych & electronic soundscape helps me to mentally detach and drift when I need to; the feeling of exhaustion and world-weariness on a lot of the tracks often feels cathartic at the end of my day, too. 7 is just a mood that resonates with me for seemingly no logical reason — flaws and all.

You’re crazy for liking this 7 shit. It’s fine, but idk. I’m not too surprised they blew up, I guess. They shook me when I discovered them when I was younger. I honestly hated Bloom when it came out, so I didn’t listen to anything else of theirs until like, 2018. Then I realized I missed out on DC, but not much else. Idk. Nu Beach House sounds like it’s designed for an MTV teen drama or something. I’m kinda surprised the fan base isn’t divided. Kinda like how people prefer old AFI or people prefer the emo AFI, you know? Old Beach House is just so different. I’m surprised no one is like, “fuck this, the first 3 were better” or whatever. Good on them tho of course lol.

Yeah! I saw her 3 times. Idk how you knew that but I love it. First saw her for Hiss Spun, then when she opened for Ministry (they were good but too political for me), and for American Darkness. She played an unreleased song there but I honestly can’t remember how it sounded. She was like, hey, what if I played an unreleased song and I was thinking oh fuck. Definitely see her whenever you can. She should be back touring in a year, if I had to guess. I used to troll Chelsea’s Facebook way back and I’d ask her stupid shit because I was 15 and stupid, but she was really nice. I regret not telling her I loved her music, but at least I asked her about Taco Bell, I guess.

Btw do you like Zola Jesus? I don’t see her in your library. You should check out Okovi or Stridulum (every album of hers is a hit imo tbh) (Night is her best song imo too) She’s compared to Chelsea a lot so I’m assuming you know, but yea, she’s great, too.

Hi! :) I'm clearly super biased, but I think they're worth a listen — especially if you enjoy 00s alt rock, or "gothic" music like Chelsea Wolfe, or Cocteau Twins! It's tricky to recommended a specific album though because they've shifted genres and vocalists a lot over their life... If you want something metallic with early 4AD vibes (ie - subtle DCD & Cocteau Twins influences) then go with "Mandylion." If you're looking for a blend of 00s alt rock an trip hop then "Souvenirs" is great place to start. Both "How To Measure a Planet" and "Disclosure" draw from with prog rock and post-rock (the latter album is a good place to see if you like Silje as a vocalist).

I hope it works out, but, if not, no worries! I'd still be curious to hear what you think because not many people listen to them. Also, fair warning — while I love them to bits, Anneke's lyrical choices are sometimes... unique (you'll maybe understand if you end up listening to "Liberty Bell" 😅). Atmosphere is something they usually do well though!

I'm not super familiar with Rollins or Black Flag (will check that out asap) — but have you ever been to a spoken word show? They can be surprisingly intense even when the speaker/poet doesn't have hardcore punk credentials. $20-40 USD sounds about right for that kind of performance too!

I think all of us are constantly trying to improve on how we deal with trolls, bullies, and the influx hateful vitriol online — I know I don't always get it right. You get to a certain point in your life and then you start to see the historical patterns (of hypocrisy). Sometimes debating (+ educating) or simply naming the bigotry for what it is is effective, while othertimes you're better off cutting them loose & blocking them - especially if it becomes evident that they are not engaging in good faith or are resorting to dehumanizing comments! That's some advice: even though they are being cruel and hateful, don't dehumanize the bigots in turn or utter death threats at them; it just feeds into their deeply rooted fear, hatred, and paranoia. Calling out the logical fallacies & irrationality that enables bigotry or correcting the misinformation is generally more persuasive and empowering!

that's true you're so right but it really is very hard to be properly eloquent with these people with the way they twist words or just outright refuse to listen, lashing out becomes the normal response which i don't blame people for doing so the way you handled it was very impressive

Our tastes are very different but I'm happy about our Deftones and Boards of Canada overlap haha. After many tries as a teenager, I finally got into Music Has the Right to Children, which album would you recommend next? Also I'd appreciate some recommendations for Beach House albums. I saw them live, and enjoy them immensely, but they release so much music I can't keep up. :')

Beach House is a tough one! I'd almost say pick whatever album contains the most songs you previously enjoyed because, on the first listen (and sometimes many listens after), it can be tough to discern stylistic differences between their albums. If you don't mind the early 10's indie pop sound and Legrand's huskier vocals try Teen Dream, or fan favourite Bloom (Myth); if you want something subtlely electronic, Depression Cherry is chill (it has popular Space Song too); 7 (Lemon Glow) has more neo-psychedelia influences and is probably my favourite atm.
