Alright, well do what works for you. I don't listen to too much old school black metal. I do like some symphonic, melodic, and experimental stuff though. Currently addicted to Sigh and The Meads of Asphodel :) And I hope too! I'm going with people I just met this month! One was a guy at the gym who was wearing an Enforcer shirt and the other was a girl I met off Ok Cupid. I'm excited!

Although you don't listen to too much old school black metal, what old school black metal bands do you listen to? I don't like Sigh but I do like The Meads of Asphodel :) . If you like Experimental Black Metal, then you should give Imperial Triumphant a listen.. They're unbelievable! That's great, dude. I actually met a fellow metalhead at my gym too. I was wearing my Darkthrone shirt one day and he recognized it and then we became fast friends lol. I'm going with him to see Mayhem next month :D . Dude, I hope you have fun with those people.. especially, the girl hahaha :P . Tell me how the show was after you go :)

You don't like Sigh????? O: But yeah, Meads of Asphodel are really weird, but interesting. And yeah, I'm excited for my first metal show of 2017! And I did meet the girl and she's really awesome! She's an artist and she painted her own Battle Vest! Here's a picture: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPWV3FXj9bn/?taken-by=freezingsilver

Yeah, I don't like Sigh and the reason is because I don't like Avant-garde black metal.. sorry, dude :( . I like the weird and interesting black metal bands like Meads of Asphodel, Imperial Triumphant, etc. Wow, that's cool! She did a great job painting her own Battle Vest. Is she a professional painter or no? I like the King Crimson patch on the Battle Vest :)

You're coming from Italy all the way to the US? That's awesome! It'd be even cooler if you could come here to San Francisco! The metal scene here is awesome! I saw Dark Tranquillity earlier this week and Epica last week! I'm missing Sonata Arctica tonight, but that's okay because I'll be seeing Children of Bodom Monday! What's the metal scene like in Italy? I know Fleshgod Apocalypse, Lacuna Coil, and Rhapsody of Fire come from there

Not too much, i like Heritage a little bit, but Pale Communion is only decent as best. Damnation is an awesome CD without growl, eserves mention here.

Try to listen to album Morningrise, Orchid, Black Waterpark, Still Life, Ghost Reveries and Deliverance too. All awesome albums. More Death Metal with soft parts. Opeth as best is on Morningrise for me.

[continued from last post] One day I started writing reviews for the bands that I knew and I slowly started branching off from there, listening to different metal genres to determine what I did and didn't like. Eventually I got to the stage I'm at now where I find bands almost without looking for them. What about you? How did you get into metal?

Starkill have some cool stuff in their discography. I don't know them too well, but their first album was good. I don't tend to like doom that much as its own genre, and I also find it difficult to follow most albums in that style from end to end. There are a few exceptions like Alunah, but mostly I find it too slow and monotonous. I do like doom when it's mixed with other genres though, especially death or melodeath or gothic metal. As for getting into metal, my mum was into nu-metal and heavy metal when I was younger, so I grew up listening to Slipknot, Linkin Park and System of a Down. At some point around 15 I discovered Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom and was hooked pretty much instantly, and I started looking into more bands like them. I must have been about 16 when I discovered the Metal Archives, but I didn't really know how to use it properly to start with.

Sounds like a lose/lose situation with your iTunes. It's probably part and parcel of having a large library I guess. The genres I listen to most often are melodeath and gothic metal, although recently I've been listening to a lot of death/doom. I listen to a fair amount of symphonic stuff like Leaves' Eyes (some overlap with gothic metal) and I like quite a lot of groove metal like Chimaira and Deep Sense as well. I find folk metal tends to be either very good (like Eluveitie or Equilibrium) or very bad. It tends to feel a bit gimmicky if it isn't done right, so usually I don't listen to that much of it, and when I do it's usually bands that blend folk with other genres. Thrash isn't really my thing and outside of Megadeth and Metallica, groove metal is about as close as I come to it. The only thrash band that I listen to regularly is Hungarian band Angelus, who draw influences from death metal, groove metal, hardcore and countless other genres.

Power metal is one of those genres that I find fun for a little bit but grows slightly stale pretty quickly. As a result I don't venture into it that much, although I do enjoy the occasional band like Ecliptika. I haven't heard of Twilight Force up til now, but perhaps I should look into them. I use Spotify a lot, and as I write reviews on my laptop it makes a lot of sense to stream most releases. I do own an iPod Nano though which I use quite extensively. I've had it about six or seven years but it's still in decent condition, even if the battery life isn't what it used to be. The only problem I have with it is that it's only 8GB, so I'm quite limited in my music (stores a fair amount of songs, but my iTunes library is over 20GB). I'm thinking about replacing it with a model that has a higher storage capacity, but for now it does the job.

I see. When discovering new bands I usually check out their newest release before older ones. It's not always intended - often a lesser-known band's only release to stream on Spotify will be their latest one, for example - but it definitely helps with keeping up to date with a band's discography, as I then have a frame of reference for whether to follow their next release or not. Usually there aren't too many releases for me to get excited for in a year, but there's always something or other that interests me.

Not ideal, but at least you know how to fix it. Pretty annoying issue nonetheless! My laptop seems to be getting slower and slower as well, but I've had it for five years, so it's a little outdated. Any albums you're looking forward to this year? So far I've enjoyed the new albums from Amon Amarth and Fear of Domination, and Krimh, Karkaos, Alunah and The Project Hate all have new albums coming at some point this year or next.

That's pretty weird. It's showing you as having scrobbled Jomsviking a couple of hours back though, so hopefully that's all sorted. I had a strange problem with scrobbling Krimh's second album for ages, which was particularly bizarre as every other album by him or anyone else worked without issue. Then randomly one day it started working properly, even though to the best of my knowledge I hadn't changed anything!

It's definitely an album worth listening to if you like the rest of their discography. I think the critics are suffering a bit from Arch Enemy syndrome, if you like - because the band has a distinct sound people think their ideas start to sound too similar to each other. I find that if you listen to each album without trying to compare them to others then they're all pretty high quality. And yeah, when you mentioned A Hill to Die Upon I decided to look them up on Spotify, and what I've heard of them so far is pretty cool! Definitely going to keep looking into their stuff

That's just how it is, unfortunately! If my exam results go according to plan then I'll be going to Glasgow for university, which will hopefully help me go to more concerts. Again though, good choice of bands! What did you think of Amon Amarth's new album? Opinion seems quite mixed but I quite enjoyed it.

Concerts are a bit of a problem for me, as I live in a really sparsely populated part of Scotland where metal bands don't generally tend to tour (they barely even come to cities like Glasgow). It's a lot of travelling to get down to England and back again. The metal scene as a whole is pretty small here - EDM and techno seem to be the dominant genres and hardly anyone knows even classic bands like Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden. That's one of the reasons I find sites like MA cool I guess, because there's literally no one in my local area to discuss metal with

You're right about that, music is pretty damn expensive! The artists have to make money somehow I guess, but when the average album costs €7 then it's easy to spend a lot of money on not a lot of music. I'm digging the range of bands you're into though, it seems you've got quite diverse taste in music. I like to think that I'm open to different genres, but really most of the stuff I listen to comes under the categories melodeath or gothic in some way ;)

Yeah, there are some dodgy links on file-sharing services, so you can't be too careful I guess. Unfortunately I just don't have the patience to set out each song and individually convert them, and usually when I resort to downloading stuff it's because I couldn't find a copy elsewhere, which often includes a stream on YouTube. I own a decent amount of band t-shirts but they're mostly from reasonably well-known bands like Amon Amarth or Arch Enemy, as the smaller bands that I like tend not to sell much merch, at least not online.

I try supporting bands where possible, but I've come across some releases that I could only find on sites like MediaFire, mostly bands that don't have a label to distribute their music. Some people are intent on having everything in physical formats like CD or vinyl, but personally I find that it's easier to keep everything in order when it's stored digitally.

You're right on the whole popularity thing, but unfortunately that's just how it works in that business. And I know the feeling of having so many bands to look into as well, I have an ever-growing list of albums I want to listen to which expands quicker than I can go through it >_< Metal Archives is definitely a great resource for finding new bands, but sometimes there are just too many, which is especially frustrating when their music is difficult to track down!

As far as other recommendations goes, I think I'd have too many to list here ;) The one band I always point people towards is Infinite Tales, but there are plenty of great bands out there to discover. Mist of Nihil, Krimh, Endlesshade, there are literally thousands of bands that deserve more attention.

That 'I'm on a Boat' cover was where I first found Goatmill as well lol, they've definitely got a sense of humour but the music that they wrote themselves was actually pretty cool. Their Facebook page said they were making a new album, so I'm pretty excited for that one when it finally drops. And the particular Dementia I was talking about were the progressive melodeath band, I didn't realise that there were so many bands with the same name - although that seems to be the case for a lot of metal bands

Besides the six I've done so far I'm hoping to tackle another Cunt Cuntly album, Deadlock's 'The Re-Arrival' and a band called Desire for Sorrow. I've also been tasked with reviewing a band named Dementia, so hopefully I get that done as well. Also sorry for taking so long to reply, I tend to use last.fm somewhat sparingly ;)

Yeah, except the albums reviewed have to be ones without a review before the start of the challenge. The staff at MA host two every year, one at Christmas and one in the summer. More info on it here: http://www.metal-archives.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=114935&p=2634414
